July 28, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
FISHKILL, NY --- The Hudson Valley Renegades scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and then broke open a two-run lead on Hunter Lockwood's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 8-3 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Monday night at Dutchess Stadium.
For the second straight night the Lake Monsters jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Ryan Huck RBI single, but the Renegades scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first off Vermont starter Jerad Grundy. The big hit in the inning was a Garett Kay 2-run double for a 3-1 lead off Grundy, who has allowed a combined nine runs in the first inning of his last two starts (five runs at Lowell on July 23rd).
The Lake Monsters cut the deficit to one run in the second as John Nogowski was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Brett Vertigan followed with a ground-rule double and both runners scored on a Yairo Munoz two-runs single to center. Munoz, who also doubled in the fifth inning for a two-hit night, has now hit in nine straight games with a .375 average (12-for-32). Jose Brizuela also hit in his ninth straight game with a single in the first inning and his hitting .433 (13-for-30) during his streak.
Vermont had five hits over the first two innings, but had just two hits and baserunners over the final seven innings on the Munoz one-out double in fifth and Vertigan one-out infield single in the seventh. Vertigan was 2-for-3 in his 100th career game for the Lake Monsters (34 in 2014 after 66 in 2012), the 11th player all-time to appear in 100 games for Vermont. His second-inning double was the 22nd of his career for the Lake Monsters, the second-most all-time behind Val Pascucci's 26 doubles during the 1999 season.
The Renegades got another run for a 5-3 lead in the second off Grundy (1-5), who allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits over three innings. Reliever Dominque Vattuone retired eight of the 10 batters he faced, including six on groundballs and one by strikeout, over three scoreless innings to keep the Hudson Valley lead at two. But Michael Fagen came on in the seventh to give up a leadoff single and walk before Lockwood hit his 11th home run of the season to incease the Renegades lead to 8-3.
Five different Hudson Valley batters had a two-hit night as the Renegades pounded out 14 hits for the second straight night, while Nolan Gannon (4-1) allowed three runs on six hits and four strikeouts over five innings for the win. McNamara Division-leading Hudson Valley improved to 31-13 overall with the victory, including 18-3 at home this season and just one loss at Dutchess Stadium since June 19th (14-1).
Vermont (16-28) has lost three straight after winning three of the first four games on the eight-game roadtrip, which will wrap up at Hudson Valley on Tuesday starting at 7:05 pm. The Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field on Wednesday to open a six-game homestand against the Batavia Muckdogs and Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
