Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- In a matchup highlighted by two spectacular performances by the starting pitchers, the IronBirds fell to the Tri-City ValleyCats, 1-0.
Stephen Tarpley ran trouble right out of the gate. Tarpley hit the first batter, Bobby Boyd, with a pitch and then Boyd advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt from catcher Tanner Murphy. Boyd would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Tarpley quickly recorded the next two outs to hold the ValleyCats scoreless.
The IronBirds were held hitless until the fourth inning, when Austin Anderson recorded a two-out single.
Riley Palmer recorded the IronBirds' second base hit of the game, hitting a one-out grounder that the second baseman bobbled, allowing Palmer to reach with a single in the fifth.
After allowing two singles in the seventh inning, Tarpley departed the game, allowing four hits, three walks, and striking out four over 6.1 innings. Max Schuh entered the game to relieve Tarpley.
Schuh ran into some trouble after entering the game. After retiring the first batter, he walked Alex Hernandez, and then with the bases loaded, walked Bobby Boyd, giving the ValleyCats a 1-0 lead. Schuh then struck out Mott Hyde to exit the jam.
ValleyCats starter Troy Scribner departed the game after pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and striking out seven batters. He was replaced in the eighth inning by Jay Gause, who walked the first batter, but retired the next three to hold the IronBirds scoreless.
Closer Jordan Mills issued a one-out walk to Justin Viele, but he struck out the next two batters to end the ninth and give Tri-City the win.
Troy Scribner earned the win for the ValleyCats, with the loss going to Max Schuh. Jordan Mills earned his first save of the season.
The IronBirds close out an eight-game home stand tomorrow as they look for the series victory against the Tri-City ValleyCats. Ubaldo Jimenez will get the start for the IronBirds, while Randall Fant will get the nod for the ValleyCats.
