Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Terrific Tarpley!

The Aberdeen IronBirds got a fantastic start from Stephen Tarpley last night, closing out the road portion of their schedule with a 3-0 shutout of the Lowell Spinners, eliminating the Spinners from playoff contention. Stephen Tarpley went eight innings, allowing six hits and two walks, striking out ten. The innings pitched and strikeouts were both career highs for the young left hander. He also did not allow a run for the first time this season. Riley Palmer, playing in front of family and friends, hit a two out, three run home run in the sixth inning, with Jay Gonzalez and Austin Anderson on base, and it gave the IronBirds a 3-0 edge they would carry the rest of the way. The IronBirds had six base hits on the evening, including a Tad Gold double, his first of the season.

10 17

Stephen Tarpley became the 17th pitcher in IronBirds' history to record at least ten strikeouts in a game, and was the first to do so since Sebastian Vader had ten strikeouts in Brooklyn on June 23, 2013 in an Aberdeen extra inning win. Tarpley finished one strikeout shy of the franchise record for most strikeouts in a game by a left-handed pitcher. That mark of 11 is currently held by Richard Zagone, who set the mark on August 13, 2008 in a game at Vermont.

High Five For Riley Palmer

Riley Palmer's sixth inning home run was his fifth of the season. It was the IronBirds' fourth home run of the road trip, and 15th away from Ripken Stadium this season. It was just the second three run home run Aberdeen has had this season, with the first coming off the bat of Austin Anderson back on August 11th against Jamestown.

Burke Completes Nice Trip

After earning the win in the road trip opener Monday night against the Hudson Valley Renegades, Mike Burke earned his second career save and first with the IronBirds last night, pitching a perfect ninth inning. He struck out two and induced a groundout in a perfect ninth. On the trip, he pitched three innings, allowed just two hits and struck out five total hitters. He was drafted by the Orioles in the 30th round this year out of the University of Buffalo.

On the Mound Tonight...

RHP Matthew Grimes gets the start for the IronBirds this evening. The Orioles' 18th round pick out of Georgia Tech will be making his fifth start of the season.
