From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Durham scored six unanswered to knock off the Tribe last night, 6-1. Indy plated its lone run in the first, using a Kevin Newman leadoff dou-ble and Ryan Lavarnway RBI double to right-center to go up 1-0 against Andrew Moore. The Bulls grabbed the lead for good on a Brandon Lowe two-run rocket into the right-field corner. Lowe then opened the fourth with a walk and scored on a Nick Ciuffo double. Durham added one more in the fifth and two in the sev-enth on an Adam Moore double. The Indians had just five hits, their lowest total since a three-hit showing on June 11 vs. Toledo in a 4-0 loss. Alex McRae started both that June 11 contest and last night's game, suffering his team-high seventh defeat. Indy has scored two runs or less in seven of his 14 starts this year.

RYAN RAKING: Indy catcher Ryan Lavarnway is riding a season-high 10-game hitting streak into tonight's contest. Lavarnway finished 1-for-4 with a first-inning RBI double in last night's loss. He owns a tremendous .898 OPS through 28 games and is batting .301 (28-for-93) with three homers, one triple, seven doubles and 12 RBI on the season. He is batting .400 (14-for-35) with all three of his home runs this season, two doubles, seven RBI and five runs scored during his hitting streak. He has reached base safely in 21 of his last 22 games.

GOOD CONTACT: Kevin Newman has hit safely in nine straight games, going 14-for-37 (.378) to raise his average from .297 to .309, tied for the sixth-best mark in the IL. The 24-year-old also had a nine-game streak from May 9-18 this season. He is first in the IL with 41 runs scored, tied for first in stolen bases (15) and third in hits (79). He has been a better hitter when behind in the count this season, owning a .351 average (34-for-97) in those situations, compared to a .238 clip (15-for-63) when ahead in the count. He has struck out in just 10.7 percent of his plate appearances this season (30 K/280 PA), the second-lowest percentage in the IL.

EIGHT IS GREAT: Jordan Luplow has hit safely in a season-high eight straight contests and 15 of his last 17 overall, elevating his average from .256 to .276 and OPS from .799 to .831. He is batting .462 (12-for-26) with one homer, four doubles, one RBI, five runs scored and six walks against just four strikeouts during his eight-game streak.

LITTLE BIT OF LUCK: Christopher Bostick has a .363 average on balls put in play this season, the 11th-best mark in the IL and highest on the Indians roster. Last year he had a .353 BABIP, good for the seventh-highest clip in the league.

THE MORE YOU KNOW: Among IL players with 100-plus plate appearances, Ryan Lavarnway's 158 wRC+ is sixth in the league. To understand the meaning of wRC+, Lavarnway's wRC+ means he created 58% more runs than a league average hitter would have in the same number of plate appearances. League average wRC+ is always 100. wRC+ is park and league-adjusted, allowing one to to compare players who played in different years, parks, and leagues.

ABOVE LEAGUE AVERAGE: Jordan Luplow (134 wRC+), Kevin Kramer (129), Christopher Bostick (128) and Kevin Newman (114) all have positive wRC+ marks among league qualifying batters. Jose Osuna, currently with Pittsburgh, posted a 164 wRC+, a mark that ranks fourth in the IL among players with 100-plus PAs.

BY THE NUMBERS - 30 / 11.3%: Jordan Luplow has walked a team-high 30 times this season while Kevin Kramer is second with 20. Luplow's 30 walks are tied for fifth most in the International League, and his 11.3 percent walk rate (30 BB/266 PA) is eighth in the league. He posted a career-low 9.1 percent walk rate (51 BB/557 PA) in 2017 across three levels after a career-high 14.1 percent walk rate (60 BB/425 PA) in 2016.

A RARE 'L': Last night's defeat was Indy's first at Victory Field since June 11 vs. Toledo, snapping a six-game home winning streak. The six-game streak was In-dy's longest at The Vic since a seven-gamer from May 13-30, 2017. The Tribe have 22 wins at home this year, tied with Toledo and trailing only Lehigh Valley (23).
