From the Notes
ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Indians couldn't finish off a rare perfect road trip as they dropped the finale in Pawtucket yesterday, 11-1. The Red Sox scored five runs in the third off Brandon Waddell, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Mike Olt. They plated four more runs in the fourth against Jesus Liranzo, capitalizing on four walks issued by the Tribe righty. Ivan De Jesus Jr. clubbed a three-run double in that frame. Pawtucket tallied two runs in the fifth to go up 11-0 before Jose Osuna drove in Indy's only run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, scoring Pablo Reyes. Waddell dropped to 1-2 in three Triple-A starts while southpaw Josh Smith (4.1ip, 1h, 1r/er, 1bb, 7k) earned the win in relief for the PawSox. Indy was out-hit 11-4 and had its seven-game winning streak come to an end with the loss.
STREAK SNAPPED: Indy had its season-high seven-game winning streak snapped yesterday in Pawtucket. It was their longest winning streak since an eight-gamer from May 16-21, 2017. The streak was the 10th of seven or more consecutive wins for the Tribe since 1996, the year Victory Field opened. The Tribe hit .324 (82-for-253) with 50 runs scored (7.14 runs per game) during their winning streak. They slugged 13 home runs, 21 doubles, averaged 11.7 hits per game and swiped six bases. On the mound during the streak, Indy owned a 0.95 ERA (6 ER/63.0 IP) and 1.13 WHIP, scattering 46 hits and 25 walks with 61 strikeouts. They outscored their opponents 50-7 during the streak, as well.
TIME FOR TOLEDO: The Indians and Mud Hens have met six times this season, three at The Vic and three at Fifth Third Field. Toledo took two of three from the Tribe in the Circle City from April 9-11 before Indy returned the favor by taking two of three on the Mud Hens' home turf from April 30-May 2. The Indians have hit .289 (61-for-211) with 35 runs scored and 26 extra-base hits (17 doubles, 4 triples, 5 homers) against Toledo pitching; the Mud Hens have hit .295 (62-for-210) with 40 runs scored and 25 extra-base hits (15 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs) against Tribe pitching. Christopher Bostick (.471, 8-for-17, 5 doubles, 2 RBI), Kevin Kramer (.409, 9-for-22, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run, 2 RBI) and Jose Osuna (.348, 8-for-23, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 6 RBI) have enjoyed the most success against Mud Hens pitchers so far this season.
GUNG HO FOR JUNG HO: Infielder Jung Ho Kang joins the Indians on a rehab assignment for their four-game series against first-place Toledo starting tonight. Kang, 31, signed with the Pirates in January 2015 and finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting that fall behind Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and Giants infielder Matt Duffy. Kang hit .287 with 15 home runs, 24 doubles and 58 RBI in 126 games that season. The following year, he belted 21 home runs and drove in 62 runs in 103 games with the Buccos. He hit the disabled list twice in 2016 with left knee and left shoulder injuries, resulting in a total of 16 rehab games with the Tribe. He batted .146 (7-for-48) with two homers and seven RBI for Indianapolis. Kang missed all of the 2017 season and returned to the United States this year. He posted a .417 average (10-for-24) and 1.406 OPS with three long balls, two doubles and 11 RBI in seven rehab games with High-A Bradenton.
DOWN GOES FRAZIER: Utilityman Adam Frazier was optioned by Pittsburgh yesterday and officially joined the Tribe roster today. He hit .237 (32-for-135) with three home runs, two triples, three doubles, eight RBI and 23 runs scored in 56 games for the Pirates. Frazier played in three rehab games for the Tribe in 2017, batting .400 (4-for-10) with a 1.038 OPS. He first played for the Indians in 2016, hitting .333 (87-for-261) with 16 doubles, four triples, 22 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 68 games. Frazier was a sixth-round selection by the Pirates out of Mississippi State in the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft.
IT'S HOW YOU START: The first inning has been kind to the Indians over their last 49 games. Through Indy's first 11 games of the season, the Tribe were outscored by their opponents 19-2 in the first inning; since then, Indy has outscored its opponent by a whopping 31 runs (43-12) in the opening frame.
PUT AWAY THE BROOM: The Indians earned their first series sweep of 2018 when they took all three games in Rochester to begin their last road trip. The Tribe then took the first two games in Pawtucket before falling yesterday, 11-1. Since 1988 (25 seasons of playing one another), the Indians have swept a series over the PawSox at McCoy Stadium just one time (2003, 4-0).
