International League Names Players of the Week

The International League announced today that Pawtucket center fielder Rusney Castillo and Lehigh Valley left-handed starter Cole Irvin have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 4-10. Irvin is now a two-time recipient, having also been honored May 7-13, and he joins two-time Batter of the Week Joey Meneses to give the IronPigs an IL-best four weekly awards this season. Castillo is the second member of the PawSox to be so honored in 2018, following pitcher Jalen Beeks (April 16-22).

RUSNEY CASTILLO, Pawtucket Red Sox IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo batted .500 over the past week with a League-best 12 hits and four extra base hits, which included his third homer of the season. He collected a career-high five hits against Louisville on Tuesday, part of an overall eight-game hitting streak for the former International League All-Star that remains active. Castillo leads the circuit this season with 74 hits to go along with a .316 batting average (3rd in IL) and 19 doubles (T-2nd ).

30-year-old Rusney Castillo is in his fifth season since signing with the Red Sox as a free agent in August of 2014. He is a veteran of 99 games in the Major Leagues with Boston and has seen time in Pawtucket each season since 2015. Castillo is a native of Ciego de Avila, Cuba.

COLE IRVIN, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK On Tuesday, Cole Irvin became the first IL pitcher this season to win seven games, then on Sunday he became the first to reach eight wins. He paced the circuit this week with 13.0 innings pitched and eleven strikeouts, surrendering just three runs and ten hits along the way to leading Lehigh Valley to road victories over Gwinnett and Charlotte. Thanks in no small part to Irvin, the IronPigs currently lead the IL North Division by 2.5 games. In addition to owning the most victories, Irvin is the League-leader in innings pitched this season (75.2) and is 5th in both strikeouts (66) and ERA (2.62).

24-year-old Cole Irvin is in his third season as a professional pitcher and first playing above the Double-A classification. He was a 5th -round draft choice of the Phillies in 2016, and last year he was an All-Star in the Class-A Florida State League. Irvin is a native of Yorba Linda, California.
