Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the opening game of a three-game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-1, on Monday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Chris Dominguez launched a home run for Syracuse in the game, and Chiefs pitchers struck out 13 Red Sox batters.
Pawtucket (29-32) got on the board in the top of the first inning. Tzu-Wei Lin led off with a single, advanced to second base on an Aneury Tavarez groundout, and Lin scored on a Rusney Castillo single to left-center field for a 1-0 Pawtucket lead.
The Red Sox added a pair of runs in the third. With one out, Castillo walked, Adam Lind singled, and Mike Ohlman walked to load the bases. Ivan De Jesus Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that moved Lind to third and scored Castillo to give Pawtucket a 2-0 edge. Mike Olt then singled to left field, scoring Lind from third to make it a 3-0 Red Sox advantage.
Syracuse (28-33) scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Dominguez hammered a pitch over the wall in straightaway center field for a home run that cut the Pawtucket lead to two, 3-1.
Chiefs starting pitcher Austin Voth struck out eight batters in six innings pitched with two walks and three runs allowed. The right-hander threw a season-high 109 pitches with a season-high 71 strikes. Relievers Josh Edgin and David Goforth combined for five strikeouts in the game's final three innings.
Pawtucket starting pitcher William Cuevas allowed three hits and one run in eight innings on the mound. The right-hander struck out six batters and walked just one en route to the win. Reliever Bobby Poyner closed out the game for the Red Sox and picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
Syracuse and Pawtucket continue their three-game series with game two on Tuesday night. LHP Tommy Milone will start on the mound for Syracuse, while RHP Chandler Sandler will throw for Pawtucket. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
