From the Notes
ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Indians had to settle for a series split with the Stripers yesterday, falling 4-1 in a rain-shortened, five-inning finale. Clay Holmes surrendered four runs with two outs in the first inning. Xavier Avery doubled home a pair of runs, ahead of a Tyler Smith RBI single and Chris Stewart run-scoring triple. Holmes erased 13 of the next 14 men he faced, but his offense could only back him with one run. Jose Osuna doubled in the fourth and later scored Indy's lone run on a Jacob Stallings groundout to third. Jordan Luplow went 2-for-2 to raise his average to a season-high .247. Matt Wisler earned the win for the Stripers, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
FIVE FRAMES: Yesterday's five-inning affair was just the fifth Tribe game to last only five innings in the Victory Field era and third ever to be played at The Vic. Prior to yesterday, Indy's most recent five-inning game came on July 12, 2008 vs. To-ledo, a game that featured a 1-hour, 44-minute rain delay before being called. Indy lost that contest against the Mud Hens, 1-0. Indy's first five-inning game at The Vic came on July 9, 2004 vs. Ottawa, a 3-0 shutout. The Tribe's two five-inning games on the road occurred on May 24, 2001 at Pawtucket (L, 3-1) and Aug. 16, 1998 at Durham (L, 9-4).
THE LAST TIME WE WERE HERE: Indianapolis' last trip to Louisville Slugger Field was a memorable one. Playing a five-game series from Aug. 28-31, the Indians split a doubleheader to start the set and then lost the following night, 7-4. All was not lost for the Tribe, however, as Toledo defeated Columbus just minutes after Indy's loss, giving the Indians their fourth division title in the last six seasons. Indy went on to win the fourth and fifth games of the series, 6-1 and 8-6, leaving them with a 7-4 record at Louisville for the 2017 season. Indy is 99-92 all-time at Louisville and leads the series, 196-192.
SUCCESS VS. LOUISVILLE PITCHING: Four of Indy's regulars had a great deal of success against Louisville pitchers in 2017. Erich Weiss hit a whopping .441 (26-for-59) with six doubles, three homers and 17 RBI in 19 games against the Bats. Christopher Bostick batted .309 (25-for-81) with one triple, five doubles and seven RBI in 22 affairs. Jordan Luplow went 11-for-39 (.282) with one home run and three doubles in 13 contests against Louisville, and Austin Meadows hit .556 (5- for-9) with two doubles and one RBI in three games.
UNCHARACTERISTIC CLAY: Yesterday's starting pitcher, Clay Holmes, lost for just the fourth time in 18 career games (17 starts) at Victory Field, allowing four first-inning runs -- all with two outs -- as Indy lost the rain-shortened contest, 4-1. His 21.0-inning scoreless streak at The Vic dating back to Aug. 8, 2017 against Buffalo was quickly erased on a two-run double by Xavier Avery in the opening frame. Holmes settled in after a Chris Stewart RBI triple, retiring 13 of his final 14 batters faced, but the Tribe offense couldn't rally against Matt Wisler. Holmes is now 7-4 with a 2.75 ERA (26 ER/85.0 IP) all-time at Victory Field.
BY THE NUMBERS - 1:23: Yesterday's game lasted just 1 hour and 23 minutes, which ranks as the third-fastest game to be played by the Tribe in the Victory Field era. Indy's shortest contests by time are both 1 hour, 19 minutes (7/12/08 vs. TOL, 7/9/04 vs. OTT), with both games also lasting only five innings.
