LAST TIME OUT: For the second straight day, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Pawtucket Red Sox 2-0, this time spoiling the Triple-A debut of LHP Justus Sheffield. Sheffield is the No. 3 prospect in the New York Yankees organization according to Baseball America and is a consensus Top-50 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball according to the major prospect publications. He entered his start Sunday with a 1-2 record and 2.25 ERA over five starts with the Trenton Thunder to begin the season, but took a handful of batters to settle into the game.

Pawtucket opened the scoring in the home half of the first against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher Justus Sheffield. The southpaw, making his Triple-A debut, allowed the first three batters to reach on a single, a walk and a single to load the bases. A Jordan Betts sacrifice fly brought in Rusney Castillo for the game's first run. Clint Frazier caught a foul pop by Dan Butler down the left field line, but Ivan De Jesus tagged from third to score on a sac fly for the two-run lead.

Sheffield found his groove, starting in the second inning, striking out the side. The left-hander worked 4.2 innings in his first RailRiders appearance, striking out six and walking four.

FALLING BEHIND EARLY...: Sunday afternoon, the Pawtucket Red Sox scored their lone two runs of the game in the 1st inning on a pair of sacrafice flies off starting pitcher LHP Justus Sheffield. Even though it was just his first career start with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, it continues a trend by RailRiders starters this season in which they allow early runs. In the first two innings of games this season, opponents are outscoring the RailRiders 37-12 (-25) which has immediately put SWB in an early hole. In fact, of the 29 games this season the opponent has scored first only 16 times (55%), but the RailRiders are 4-12 (.250) when allowing the first run of the game.

...MAKING IT CLOSE LATE: Meanwhile, the RailRiders are doing their best to make a run at teams when trailing in the later innings. SWB is +27 in run differential in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings, outscoring their opponents 48-21 in that time. Despite those impressive numbers, the RailRiders are just 2-15 when trailing after six innings and 1-12 when trailing after eight innings -- the lone comeback win in the 9th inning being the five-run bottom of the 9th on Opening Night in which Abiatal Avelino capped a 6-5 win with a walk-off three-run home run.

SHUTOUTS A-PLENTY: The Pawtucket Red Sox shutout the RailRiders for the second straight day Sunday afternoon, 2-0. It marks the fourth time in the last nine games that the RailRiders have been shutout, and it is the sixth time this season in 29 games they've been blanked (once every 4.8 games). Out of the 120 full-season Minor League Baseball teams, only Myrtle Beach (A+, CHC) has been shutout more with seven. Beyond that, only SWB, Pawtucket (AAA, BOS), Lehigh Valley (AAA, PHI) and Frederick (A+, BAL) have been shutout even six times this season.

ELIAS SAYS: A pair of former SWB RailRiders made some history in the big leagues Sunday according to Elias Sports Bureau. INF Gleyber Torres (21 years, 144 days) became the youngest player since at least 1908 to hit a walk-off HR for the Yankees. As exciting as the finish was, the start by RHP Domingo German was equally impressive. German became the first pitcher since the mound was moved to 60' 6" in 1893 to throw at least six hitless innings with at least 9 K in his first career start, and he became the first Yankee to record a hitless start of 6+ innings in his first start. Meanwhile German and Cleveland's RHP Mike Clevinger are the first pair of opposing starters since 1908 to record at least 9K while allowing 1H-or-fewer in the same game (7.1 IP, H, 10 K).
