Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The CHL's Ninth-ranked Kingston Frontenacs (23-10-3-0) continue a three-game northern road swing taking on the Central Division Sudbury Wolves (13-22-3-1) in the second game of back-to-back action. Last night, the Frontenacs beat the Colts 5-2 in Barrie. The East Division-leading Black and Gold hold a three-point lead on second-place Hamilton, winning six of their last seven games. Kingston puts their 11-4-1-0 road record on the line against a struggling Wolves club with nine wins in 18 games at the Sudbury Community Arena. Sudbury has three wins in the last five and enters tonight's action coming off a 6-5 home win over Barrie on January 30.
Kingston and Sudbury have beaten each other once in the two games played this season, both in the Limestone City. A wild 5-4 win at Leon's Centre by Kingston on October 15 saw Kingston take a 4-0 lead before holding off a spirited Wolves comeback with an eventual game-winner and first OHL goal by Matthew Soto, with fellow rookie Chris Thibodeau also scoring his first career OHL marker.
That loss was avenged by the Wolves for an 8-4 victory on January 14, seeing a reversal from the first game with Sudbury opening up the 4-0 lead on the way to the win. Rookie netminder Aidan Spooner saves 10 of 12 shots in relief of starter Leevi Meriläinen.
Sudbury has allowed the second-most goals against (162) in the Eastern Conference with a 4.15 GAA. The Frontenacs on the other hand have scored 151 goals this season. The team is averaging the second-best goals per game average at 4.19 in the conference. In this matchup, coach Luca Caputi's squad has a major advantage in potential firepower. The Frontenacs lead the OHL with four players (Lucas Edmonds, Jordan Frasca, Martin Chromiak, and Shane Wright) in the top-20 in league scoring.
The Frontenacs would do well to stay out of the box in any game, but will face the last place Sudbury powerplay, operating at a league-low 12.7%. Kingston has one of the best powerplays in the league operating at 25.5%. Special teams could be an essential component for a Fronts win.
