Clean Slate

After suffering consecutive one-goal losses on Friday and Saturday, the Winterhawks wrap up their first grueling three-in-three of the season tonight in Calgary. It's been a frustrating start to the Alberta trip, with missed opportunities looming large as Portland seeks its first win. But the beauty of this congested schedule is that there's no time to dwell on the negatives - only on the task ahead.

The Hitmen have struggled to start the season like Red Deer and Edmonton, but have won three straight and have points in five straight. A team that features two NHL Draft picks and a potential 2024 first-rounder in Carter Yakemchuk is a dangerous club, and they'll be keen to keep climbing out of the Eastern Conference basement. It's a new challenge for the Hawks, but one they'll certainly be up for as they look for win #1 in Alberta.

Family Matters

The Hawks have been treated to some friendly crowds to start this trip, with families from across Western Canada cheering the team on in Red Deer and Edmonton. That support is expected to peak tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome, with four Hawks (Josh Davies, Nick Johnson, Kyle McDonough and Marcus Nguyen) from the Calgary area.

"(On Sunday), I'm pretty sure my mom booked a whole section, so I'll have a lot of support which is really cool," said McDonough. "Playing in the home barn that I grew up watching the (Calgary) Flames and (Calgary) Hitmen play will be really cool. A dream come true."

These trips offer unique opportunities for players to skate in familiar territory with friendly faces in the stands, and tonight should be another memorable affair - but it'll be even better with a win. Look for an energetic Portland side eager to put on a show for their loved ones.
