Raiders Win Nasty Game Over Broncos By 4-2 Final
October 29, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
It was a rock 'em sock 'em type of game in Prince Albert on Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre. It was a game that saw goals, hits, a line brawl, and much more. At the end of the night, the Raiders celebrated a 4-2 win in front of their fans.
The Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, and Brayden Dube got things started. A loose puck was thrown in front of the net by Krzysztof Macias, and Dube was right there to blast home a one timer for his fifth goal of the season 6:18 into the game to make it 1-0.
The Raiders were awarded two powerplay in the first period, and they capitalized on their second chance. Jacob Hoffrogge threw a puck on net that was stopped and sat in front of the crease, and Niall Crocker bulldozed his way to the puck and through Broncos netminder Joey Rocha to bury the Raiders' second goal of the night. His fifth goal of the season gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead with 6:49 left in the first.
A pretty passing play between linemates gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead with 4:47 left in the opening frame. Niall Crocker sent a lead feed ahead for Cole Peardon, who then sent a pass cross-crease for Hayden Pakkala. On the doorstep, Pakkala tapped home his third goal of the season to give Prince Albert a three goal lead.
After not having a shot through the first half of the period, the Broncos found their first goal of the game with 2:31 left in the first. A quick two on one rush led to Mathew Ward feeding Clarke Caswell, who slipped a shot five hole past Chase Coward. His sixth goal of the season made it a 3-1 game after 20 minutes of play.
Ryder Ritchie and Tyson Laventure exchanged goals in the second period, as the Raiders took a 4-2 lead into the third.
All hell broke loose at the 10:17 mark of the third period, as 14 different penalties were handed out. It all started when Van Eger absolutely bulldozed Chase Coward, which resulted in a retaliation from the Raiders. A line brawl broke out, and six fighting majors were assessed, with handfuls of other penalties being handed out, including six game misconducts: four to the Broncos and three to the Raiders, resulting in both sides being shorthanded to finish the game.
Another skirmish started with 31 seconds left in regulation. Caleb Wyrostok of the Broncos jumped Eric Johnston and wacked him in the face with a nasty high stick, which resulted in the Bronco being handed a major slashing penalty, and another major penalty for attempting to injure. Harrison Lodewyk and Ryan McCleary also dropped the gloves, with more fighting majors handed out.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Raiders were finally able to celebrate a 4-2 win over Swift Current, improving to 8-5-0-1 on the season.
Chase Coward stopped 19 of 21 shots on goal in the win for the Raiders, who are back in action tomorrow afternoon in Moose Jaw. Puck drop is at 2pm.
