Elliott's 40-Save Performance Not Enough in Blades' Loss to Wheat Kings
October 29, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
Brandon, MB - Saskatoon Blades goalie Austin Elliott stopped 40 shots in a 2-1 loss at Westoba Place Saturday against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
The Strathmore, AB product is the reason this game stayed as low scoring as it did, making plenty of impressive saves at crucial points in the game. The man known as "Auzzy" sees his record fall to 6-3-0-0.
It's the third straight loss for the Blue and Gold, mustering five goals in that stretch. Despite the recent stretch of play, Saskatoon's hot start has positioned them still in the race for top of the Eastern Conference with a 8-5-0-0 record.
Brandon defenceman Quinn Mantei sniped his first goal of the season six minutes into the game. The Weyburn, SK product went bardown on Blades goalie Austin Elliott to give the Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead.
Wheaties forward Roger McQueen extended the lead to two with a powerplay goal. The 6-foot-5 center now owns ten goals and 19 points in 16 games this season after an assist on the opening goal. Despite being outshot 20-7 in the first, the Blades only trailed by a pair.
The Blades were inches away from a couple goals in the second as forwards Egor SIdorov and Trevor Wong both ringed shots off the iron. The score remained 2-0 heading into the third.
Wong scored a goal with 13 seconds left in the game to bring the Blades within one. It's the second straight game the Blades scored on a 6-on-5 with Elliott to the bench for the extra attacker. Wong leads the club in points with 18 (4G, 14A), but his heroics came too late as the Blades drop their third straight.
