Comeback Falls Short in Calgary

Portland Winterhawks News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Winterhawks fired over 60 shots on net and a pair of Calgary natives scored in their hometown, but their late comeback bid fell short as the Hitmen took a 7-4 win at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday.
The Hitmen opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Maxim Muranov and Sean Tschigerl, but Marcus Nguyen continued his hot streak to get the Hawks back within a goal before the buzzer. The local product scored his third goal in two games on a breakaway 16:07 into the opening frame, with the assist going to Diego Buttazzoni to extend his point streak to 12 games.
Despite Nguyen's late strike, Calgary quickly snuffed out any momentum with three consecutive goals in 7:08 to start the second stanza. Oliver Tulk picked up a power-play goal 32 seconds in, followed 37 seconds later by David Adaszynski. Tschigerl followed up soon after with his second of the night to make it 5-1. Portland again got up off the mat as Gabe Klassen snuck home a puck at the side of the net midway through the frame, but Calgary's big second period continued as Tyson Galloway ripped a shot home at 14:42 for a 6-2 lead.
The Hawks' strongest push came in the third, striking twice in the third period to get within a pair. Josh Davies - another Calgary product - grabbed the first 9:00 into the final frame with a fantastic solo effort to hold off a defenseman and rip a wrister from the right circle. Four minutes later, Kyle Chyzowski gave the Hawks a little more life as he capitalized on a loose puck in the high slot to make it 6-4. But as they did in the first two periods, the Hitmen again had an answer as Carter MacAdams sealed their 7-4 win with another tally at 14:21.
Portland's Luke Brunen put in a stout effort despite the scoreline, turning aside 28 shots in his second WHL start. At the other end, Ethan Buenaventura posted a whopping 57/61 saves to help the Hitmen to victory.
The Winterhawks are back in action on Wednesday against the Medicine Hat Tigers at 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time.
