Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades struck out 16 times as they fell 3-2 in 10 innings to the Staten Island Yankees Thursday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The loss gave the series win to Staten Island as they won two of the three games between the clubs.
Hudson Valley had a chance to break out on top early as they loaded the bases with no one out in the first. However, Staten Island starter Abismael Villaman struck out the next three hitters to get out of the jam unscathed.
The Yankees would break through with single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead. Leftfileder Evan Alexander started the inning with a lined single to left, went to third on a double by centerfielder Everson Perira, then scored three batters later as designated hitter Leonardo Molina lined a single to left. Staten Island had a chance for more with the bases loaded and one out, however Renegades starter Rodolfo Sanchez got a popup and flyout to limit the damage.
In the second, shortstop Luis Santos drew a one-out walk before moving to second on a wild-pitch from Sanchez. After swiping third, Santos scored as Alexander roped another single to left to make the score 2-0.
The Renegades bounced back with a two-run third to tie the game. With one away, designated hitter Greg Jones drilled a triple to center. First-baseman Jacson McGowan followed with a single to center to put Hudson Valley on the board. After another single and fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two out, second baseman Cristhian Pedroza grounded a single to right to bring in McGowan and tie the game at two.
In the tenth, Hudson Valley started the inning with centerfielder Garrett Hiott at second per the international tiebreaker instituted throughout minor league baseball last season. With one out, Hiott moved to third on a wild pitch. Jones followed and grounded to Staten Island first-baseman Mitchell Robinson who fired to the plate to gun down Hiott trying to score.
In the bottom-of-the-tenth, Periera started at second for the Yankees. After a hit-batsman started the inning, Juan De Leon laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to move runners to second and third. With one out and the infield in, Molina grounded to McGowan near the bag at first. The Hudson Valley first sacker stepped on the base, then fired home to try and retire Periera breaking for the plate. However, Periera was able to beat the wrap and give the Yankees the win.
Each team had nine hits in the game. Eight of the nine starting Renegades had at least one base-knock. The only batter with more than one hit was catcher Jonathan Embry who went 2-4 with two singles. The Yankees got two hits apiece from Alexander, Periera, and catcher Jerry Seitz. Periera doubled and scored the game-winning run, while Alexander scored a run and drove in another.
Staten Island pitchers retired the final 16 Hudson Valley batters in a row. Getting the win in relief was Barrett Loseke (1-0) who struck out three in 2.1 innings. The most dominant performer was fellow-reliever Tim Hardy who struck out six of the nine hitters he faced.
Taking the loss for the Renegades was Andrew Gross (0-1, 1.59). The run he gave up in the tenth was unearned. He also allowed a hit, a walk, and struck out two.
Hudson Valley now heads to Connecticut where they will begin a three-game series with the Tigers tomorrow. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Righty Chris Gau (0-2, 7.27 ERA) will pitch for the Renegades against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Tigers.
The Renegades return home on Monday, July 1st when they open a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com, in person at the Dutchess Stadium ticket window, or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
