Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves split a doubleheader with the Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett (23-28) won Game 1 by a score of 4-3. Game 1 was restarted in the bottom of the 4th inning after being postponed from yesterday due to rain. Indianapolis (27-25) took Game 2, which was also halted by a rain delay of more than an hour, in a 6-0 victory in the seven-inning matchup. The G-Braves now stand tied with Norfolk at 5.5 games behind International League South leaders Durham in second place. The Indians are 6.5 games behind IL West-leading Columbus in third.

Game 1

It Was Over When: Barbaro Canizares and newest G-Brave Alex Romero homered in consecutive innings to start yesterday's game before it was postponed in the bottom of the 4th inning due to rain. The game resumed today, and the G-Braves held on for the victory.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: G-Braves ace RHP Chris Resop, who is near the top of multiple International League pitching categories, pitched to his third straight no decision thanks to Mother Nature. He finished going 4.0 IP while allowing just 1 R/ER and striking out 4. LHP Mariano Gomez (2-2) took the ball today in the game's continuation and went 3.0 IP and allowed 2 R/ER to earn the win. Closer Craig Kimbrel (RHP) pitched the final two frames to earn his seventh save on the season.

At the plate: Canizares (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) became the third G-Brave this season to hit home runs in consecutive games. The last time he accomplished that feat was 5/13/09 and 5/15/09 on the road against Buffalo. Romero (1-for-3, HR, RBI, SB) hit his first home run for Gwinnett in his first at-bat ever at Coolray Field. The last HR Romero hit at the Triple-A level was 5/9/09 as a member of the Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League. Joe Thurston also finished 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The opposition:

On the Mound: Starter RHP Daniel McCutchen (2-3) allowed 3 R/ER, walked 4 and gave up 2 HR in a losing effort for Indy.

At the plate: Brandon Moss hit his fifth homer of the season, finishing 1-for-4 on the game. Brandon Moss, a G-Brave in 2009, went 0-for-4 in his return to Coolray Field.

Game 2

It Was Over When: The tarp came off. With starter Jo-Jo Reyes unavailable after the extended rain delay, RHP Jeff Lyman came out of the bullpen for the restart and allowed three baserunners in his first four batters including a 2 RBI triple to Indy's Brian Friday.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: LHP Reyes (0-2) started Game 2, going 3.0 IP while allowing 1 R/ER and striking out 2 before the rains came. He was charged with the loss. Lyman went 2.0 IP, allowing 3 R/ER with 2 BB and 2 K's in relief.

At the plate: Alex Romero went 2-for-3 for Gwinnett. Barbaro Canizares was one of four Braves to finish 1-for-3 in the shutout, but extended his hitting streak to 5 games. Matt Young also went 1-for-3 and stole his team-leading 10th base.

The opposition:

On the Mound: RHP Hayden Penn went 3.0 IP and didn't allow a run while striking out 3 in his start before the delay. Vinnie Chulk earned his first win of the season (1-0), yielding just one hit in 2.0 IP out of the bullpen.

At the plate: Brian Friday went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and 3 RBI, while Jose Tabata hit his third HR of the year and finished 1-for-4.

On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Indianapolis tomorrow night at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. RHP Todd Redmond (4-5, 4.79 ERA) will start for the Braves for the first time since throwing the first no-hitter in franchise history his last time out (5/28 @ Louisville). Indianapolis will counter with RHP Brad Lincoln (5-2, 3.47 ERA).
