Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves 9-2 Saturday night at Knights Stadium, snapping Gwinnett's 2-game overall winning streak and 4-game winning streak against Charlotte. The G-Braves were buried from the very beginning as the Knights scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead against starter Scott Diamond. Gwinnett (71-70) failed to clinch a winning record for 2010, but can still hit the mark with one win in its final two games. The G-Braves remain 15 games behind Durham in the International League South Division, and seven games behind Louisville in the Wild Card standings. Charlotte (66-76) remains in last place in the IL South, 21.5 games behind Durham.
It Was Over When: Jeremy Reed hit a hard line drive to deep center that tipped off the glove of Gwinnett's CF Antoan Richardson for a 3-run, 2-out triple that put the Knights up 3-0 in the first inning. They would add three runs in the third with the help of a two-run homer by Dayan Viciedo to put the game away early.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: After tossing a 2-hit shutout his last time out, LHP Scott Diamond had his roughest outing as a G-Brave, going only 4 innings, allowing 8 hits and 7 runs (all earned). Vladimir Nunez pitched 2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing 2 earned runs. Mariano Gomez, making just his second appearance back from the disabled list, worked 2 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits.
At the plate: Clint Sammons (2-for-4) and Dan Nelson (2-for-4) were the only Gwinnett batters with multi-hit games. Matt Young was on base 3 times, thanks to 2 walks and a single. His bases-loaded walk in the fifth gave him his 35th RBI of the season. Richardson also knocked in a run in the 5th with a sacrifice fly. Barbaro Canizares went 1-for-4, dropping his league-leading average to .341.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Charlotte starter Kyle McCulloch earned his second straight win, going 5 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs.
