Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs and Mississauga Steelheads needed extra-time on Wednesday night at Leon's Centre. The Steelheads, for the third consecutive time, took a game to the extra-frame and for the second game in a row they collected the extra point with a 3-2 OT win. It is the second consecutive game Kingston has suffered a 3-2 overtime loss on home ice.
Starting goaltender Leevi Meriläinen was excellent in the loss saving 44 of 47 Mississauga shots earning first star status. The Frontenacs line of Shane Wright, Matthew Soto, and Martin Chromiak combined for all the scoring with six points and Soto extended a scoring streak to six games (four consecutive multi-point games) in the overtime defeat.
After going down 1-0 on an early Mississauga goal in the first period by Ty Collins, the Frontenacs battled back taking a 2-1 lead on second period goals by Shane Wright (4) and Martin Chromiak (6). Kingston would have a 3-1 goal called back on an offside review call after Chromiak had fired a shot through the legs of Steelheads starting goalie Roman Basran.
After squaring the game at 2-2 early in the final frame on an Aidan Prueter tally, the visiting Steelheads held the Frontenacs to just one shot through the first 15 minutes of the third period leading the game to an overtime finish.
Overtime saw Kingston with excellent opportunity after Chromiak took over the puck for an extended period and had two good chances on Basran. Arcuri also stole the puck at the blueline and went in alone on the Mississauga goal, but a bouncing puck prevented good wood on it.
The Steelheads got the break and prevented a shootout scoring the 3-2 winner at the buzzer on an Ethan Del Mastro goal with Luke Misa and Prueter earning assists.
Notes
Frontenacs forward Jordan Frasca was forced to leave the game after taking an errant puck to the mouth in the second period.
