Sarnia Sting News Release
KINGSTON - The Sarnia Sting dropped a 5-2 decision to the Kingston Frontenacs in Ontario Hockey League action, Saturday night in front of 4,205 fans at the K-Rock Centre.
The loss was Sarnia's fifth in their last six games.
Kingston held a 1-0 lead after one period and 3-2 after the second before scoring the only two goals of period three.
Sting head coach Trevor Letowski said he was not disappointed with his team's effort.
"I really liked our first period. It was probably one of our best first periods this season. It was a really good response after the game in Ottawa. The coaching staff really challenged the players after playing one of our worst games of the year in Ottawa."
The Sting outshot Kingston 17-11 in the opening period, but was behind by a goal.
"I think we ran out of gas," said Letowski. "We were shorthanded on the back end with only five defencemen and then one of those got hurt in the third period. Kingston is a team who throw a lot of pucks to the net. They had 47 shots against Erie the night before. They were desperate for a win. It was there for us, but we came up a little short."
The Sting began the game with only five defencemen as overager Josh Chapman is suspended indefinitely while Jakob Chychrun was a late scratch with an upper body injury.
Early in the third period rookie Josh Defarias was checked hard into the sideboards. No penalty was called. Defarias had to be helped off the ice and later went to hospital with an upper body injury.
In the second period Sting forward Alex Renaud was involved in a fight. He was handed a fighting major and came misconduct was taking the Kingston players helmet off during the fight.
This all comes on the heels playing with a full lineup in Ottawa for the first time in over a month.
"It's tough," said Letowski, when asked if his team seems to be snake-bitten with the latest round of injuries and suspensions.
"We just get most of our forwards back and now we are short on defencemen. It's frustrating of course, but we just have to go day-by-day and battle through it. We need a day of rest to re-evaluate everything and go from there."
Hayden Hodgson (16th) and Daniel Nikandrov (12th) scored the Sting goals to give the team a brief 2-1 lead early in the second period.
Nikita Korostelev, Defarias, Brandon Lindberg and goalie Trevor Dupuis picked up assists.
Conor McGlynn led Kingston snap a four-game losing streak scoring two goals and one assist. Lawson Crouse, Juho Lammikko and Jared Steege added singles. Steege's goal midway through period two proved to be the game winner.
Kingston held a 35-28 edge in shots on goal. The Sting managed only 11 shots over the final two periods.
Lucas Peressini was the winning goalie while Dupuis took the loss.
All seven goals were scored at even strength as Sarnia took only two minor penalties and Kingston one.
Next action for the Sting is Thursday when they host the Kitchener Rangers beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the RBC Centre. Friday night the two teams meet again, only this time in
Kitchener.
Sarnia returns home Sunday when they host the Mississauga Steelheads beginning at 4:05 p.m. at the RBC Centre.
Tickets for all remaining home games are on sale daily at the RBC Box Office, by calling 519-541-1717 or going online at Sarniasting.com.
