OTTAWA --Fans of the Ottawa 67's provided a resounding response to a call to action for Neil Doef, raising over $12,000 to support the Smiths Falls Bears hockey player on his road to recovery from a severe injury.

Jeff Hunt, President of Sports for the Ottawa Sports & Entertainment Group (OSEG), operators of the 67's, the Ottawa REDBLACKS and Ottawa Fury FC, presented a cheque for $12,122.02 to Ernie Beaupre, grandfather of Doef. The presentation was made during Sunday's Ontario Hockey League game at TD Place between the 67's and Erie Otters.

Doef suffered a spinal cord injury during a tournament game in December and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

"I'm so impressed with our fans and their generosity," said Hunt. "The response has been overwhelming and I thank everybody who stepped up to make this happen."

The 67's held a special fundraiser on January 18 during the team's game against the Peterborough Petes. Doef's teammates with the Bears were in attendance to collect donations and proceeds of the game's 50/50 draw were allocated for the DoefStrong campaign.

In addition, the team held an online auction, which ended yesterday, for the jerseys worn during the game on Jan. 18.

More information on the DoefStrong campaign can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/doefstrong.
