Friday Is Family Skate Night
January 4, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - Tonight is "Family Skate Night" at Westoba Place when the Brandon Wheat Kings play host to the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds.
Fans attending the game, presented by The Home Depot and Q Country Radio, are being encouraged to bring along their skates and helmets and join the Wheat Kings for a "free" public skate at the conclusion of the game.
To assist fans, the Keystone Centre has announced plans for the return of a special "Skate Check", to be held inside the Pioneer Lounge, located next to the Wheat Kings' office at the top of the east side ramp of the complex.
In addition to the post-game skate and pre-game face painting and sign making on the Keystone Centre concourse, fans attending will have the chance to win a $100 Home Depot gift card by playing the "Mystery Puck" contest. Fans can purchase a Wheat Kings' game puck for $5 and the fan that gets the one signed by captain Stelio Mattheos will be the winner. The pucks will be sold at the Home Depot concourse displays, situated at the east and west main entrances to the arena.
All proceeds from the sale of the pucks will be donated to Child & Family Services of Western Manitoba Foundation, through the Home Depot Canada Foundation.
The Wheat Kings, who will be playing their first game of 2019, will be hoping to snap a 4-game losing streak tonight.
Brandon is currently 15-14-3-3 and sitting in ninth place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference while Seattle is 11-19-4-0 and in fifth place in the U.S. Division of the Western Conference.
Mattheos returns to the Brandon lineup tonight, after serving a 3-game suspension. He currently leads the club in scoring with 26 goals and 48 points in 32 games.
Wheat Kings coach David Anning is happy to have his captain back.
"We use him in all situations," says Anning. "I think by adding Stelio back that helps and will allow us to get our lines together and some chemistry going with our pieces up front."
Tickets to the game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
Brandon closes out the weekend with a game in Swift Current on Sunday night, before returning home to host the Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday.
