Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - After a nine-run, 16-hit outburst in Tuesday's afternoon affair in Woodbridge, the Pelicans hoped for some offensive carryover against the Potomac Nationals Wednesday night. Marcos Frias saw to it that Myrtle Beach would get none.
Frias tossed six innings of one-hit ball, and he and the P-Nats bullpen combined to shut out the Pelicans en route to an 8-0 win in game three of a four-game series at Pfitzner Stadium.
The Nationals offense got Frias support early. In the bottom of the first inning, Steve Lombardozzi used a 12-pitch leadoff at-bat to smack a ground-rule double to center field. After moving to third on a Brian Peacock groundout, Lombardozzi scored on Edgardo Baez's sacrifice fly for the game's first run.
In the second, the Nationals turned the bats on even more, sending ten men to the plate in a four-run frame. Tyler Moore and Tim Pahuta traded places with inning-opening doubles for the first run of the second. Pahuta scored on a Lombardozzi RBI, and Lombardozzi and Peacock each came around to touch home plate as well to give the Nationals a 5-0 lead. Pelicans starter Brett Oberholtzer (1-1) struggled in his second start in a Myrtle Beach uniform, departing after four innings having allowed five runs, all earned, on eight hits. He walked four and struck out two.
Oberholtzer and the Pelicans bullpen settled in until the seventh, holding the P-Nats hitless from the third through the sixth, but Myrtle Beach's offense couldn't get going. Save for a Yoel Campusano single in the fourth, the Pelicans didn't muster a hit until the eighth with the game already out of reach. The Pelicans' best offensive chance came in that fourth inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but Calvin Culver grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Potomac pounded home three more times in the seventh on back-to-back one-out homers by Moore and Pahuta and an RBI double by Lombardozzi scoring Jose Lozada. Frias (1-1) showcased a marked improvement over his last outing when he didn't record an out while allowing six runs in the first inning against the Lynchburg HIllcats on April 30.
The Pelicans and Nationals conclude their four-game set Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Southpaw Matt Crim (2-0, 3.13), who took a no-decision despite departing in line for the win in Saturday's 15-inning marathon loss to the Frederick Keys, toes the rubber for his second start this season. He'll be opposed by Potomac right-hander Brad Peacock (0-3, 5.61) with first pitch slated for 7:03 PM.
The Pelicans return to Myrtle Beach following this seven-game road trip with seven at home starting Monday, May 10 against the Kinston Indians. Single game and season tickets, flex books, and mini-plans, are available now through the Pelicans Box Office by calling (843) 918-6000 or (877) 918-TIXX or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
