May 5, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Potomac Nationals starter Marcos Frias shut down Myrtle Beach Wednesday night, holding the Pelicans to one hit in six innings of work in the 8-0 shutout.
While Frias dealt the six-inning one-hitter, the P-Nats offense came to life in the first two innings.
Steve Lombardozzi led off the game with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Brian Peacock and scored on a sacrifice fly by Edgardo Baez. Lombardozzi was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI in the game.
Tyler Moore led off the second inning with a double to right, then scored as Tim Pahuta made it back-to-back doubles to start the frame. Pahuta took third on a Jose Lozada groundout, then scored on an RBI single by Lombardozzi. Peacock singled to put runners on first and second, the Baez walked to load the bases. Michael Burgess hit into an RBI fielder's choice at second, scoring Lombardozzi and advancing Peacock to third for Dan Nelson, who sent him home on a double to left.
Potomac's bats fell silent for the next four innings, but came roaring back in the seventh. Myrtle Beach reliever Van Pope surrendered back-to-back homers to Tyler Moore and Pahuta. Jose Lozada followed with a walk and scored on a double by Lombardozzi.
Moore finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Pahuta was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Dan Nelson was also 2-for-5 with an RBI on the night.
Potomac relievers Adrian Alaniz and Martin Beno were just as effective as the P-Nats' starter. Alaniz fanned three batters in two innings. Beno retired the side in succession in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
The P-Nats will have the chance to take their second series from the Pelicans Thursday night. First pitch in the series finale featuring Potomac's Brad Peacock vs. Matt Crim of Myrtle Beach is set for 7:03 p.m.
