Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD (MAY 5, 2010) - Justin Edwards threw six shutout innings and the Dash provided enough offense to beat the Frederick Keys 3-0 on Wednesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The win snapped Winston-Salem's two-game losing streak and kept the team within a game of first-place Salem in the Southern Division. The Dash will finish the four-game series with an 11 a.m. game on Thursday.

The game featured two left-handed pitchers with sub-4 ERA's as Justin Edwards opposed Rick Zagone. Both worked through the first three innings without allowing a run before the Dash (18-9) got to Zagone in the fourth.

Brandon Short led off with a single that skidded down the right field line. The base hit pushed his hitting streak to 23 games, the longest in professional baseball this season. He moved to second base on Eduardo Escobar's single and then to third on a double play ball off the bat of Jon Gilmore. Seth Loman drove him in with a broken bat blooper over the second baseman to give the Dash a 1-0 lead.

Winston added another run in the fifth. With men on second and third and one out, Drew Garcia grounded out to the pitcher. Ozzie Lewis broke for home when Zagone's throw went to first base and got there safely for the second Dash run of the night.

The Dash pushed its lead to 3-0 against Zagone (0-3) in the seventh. Kyle Shelton hit a two-out triple to center field on a ball Xavier Avery lost in the lights and scored on Garcia's single to left.

Edwards (3-2) entered the game on a personal two-game losing streak, but was in command for most of the night. He scattered six hits (five singles) over six innings and did not allow a run to pick up the win.

Kyle Bellamy tossed two shutout innings before giving way to Gregory Infante, who pitched a scoreless ninth to collect his fourth save.

Zagone pitched well, but was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings.

The shutout win was the first for the Dash this season. Previously, Winston-Salem had four wins in which it allowed one run, but had no shutouts before Wednesday night.

The Dash looks to earn a split of the four-game series on Thursday morning in an 11 a.m. start. RHP Nate Jones (3-1, 2.96) gets the nod for Winston against RHP Ryan O'Shea (2-2, 5.96). First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the webcast pre-game show begins at 10:45 on www.wsdash.com.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday, May 7 for a three-game series against the first-place Salem Red Sox. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
