Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Chris Freudenberg led a strong effort by Intimidators pitchers to quiet the Greensboro offense for a Kannapolis win, 3-1, on Saturday in front of 3,756 fans at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The left-hander struck out five batters over 5.0 innings to earn his second straight win.
Freudenberg (3-1) limited the Hoppers to a run while scattering seven hits and three walks before turning the mound over to the bullpen. Connor Walsh spun 3.0 scoreless relief innings, striking out two while allowing two hits, and Tanner Mendoca tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the save (1).
Kannapolis broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth inning. Toby Thomas was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and Chevy Clarke drew a 1-out walk. Ryan Leonards and Eddy Alvarez followed with back-to-back RBI-singles to pull ahead.
Alvarez, an Olympic silver medalist in short-track speed-skating at the 2014 Winter Games, finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, upping his average to .462 (30-65) in 16 games since joining Class A Kannapolis on Aug. 11. Former NC State catcher Brett Austin collected two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Greensboro took an early lead in the second inning. Felix Munoz led off with a base hit, and two batters later Austin Dean doubled to plate Munoz for a 1-0 lead. Kannapolis evened the score, 1-1, in the home half of the second inning when Austin led off with a single, and Carl Thomore doubled to bring him home.
Kyle Fischer took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits over 4.0 innings. Jose Arias and Tyler Kinley combined for 4.0 scoreless relief innings for the Grasshoppers
