Hickory Crawdads News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Hickory Crawdads broke up a 1-1 tie with a 3-run rally in the 9th inning Friday night, as the 'Dads utilized two hits, two walks, and an error to come away with a 4-1 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium.
The winning rally began modestly, with a leadoff walk by Marcus Greene followed by a sacrifice bunt from Luis Marte and a groundout by Nick Urbanus to move Greene to 3rd with two outs. Then with Evan Van Hoosier at bat, the Crawdads broke up the tie and took the lead on a passed ball by Shorebirds All-Star catcher Chance Sisco that allowed Greene to score from third for a 2-1 'Dads advantage. The rally would build from there, with Van Hoosier drawing a walk and Ronald Guzman singling to right prior to a RBI double from Zach Cone and a throwing error by 'Birds shortstop Jared Breen to bring in two more runs for the 4-1 lead the Crawdads would win by.
Prior to the 9th the 'Dads and 'Birds struggled for runs against starting pitchers David Ledbetter and Bennett Parry. The two hurlers navigated through four scoreless frames to start the game before Hickory scored in the top of the 5th on a double from Urbanus and a RBI single by Van Hoosier for a 1-0 lead. Delmarva promptly responded in the bottom of the inning when Tanner Rust lined his first home run of the year to right, with the solo shot tying the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 9th, with the two pitching staffs holding strong prior to the 'Dads three-run rally. Ledbetter finished the night with only one run allowed on five hits, no walks, and five strikeouts over a season-high seven innings pitched for the Crawdads while earning a no-decision. Parry also exited the game with a no-decision with one run given up on five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts during his five frames on the mound.
Hickory reliever Patrick Kaminska (4-1) earned the win with a perfect inning of work in the 8th, while teammate Jose Valdespina picked up his ninth save with a scoreless 9th. Delmarva bullpen arm Donnie Hart (1-3) took the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks over two innings pitched.
Cone ended the game going 2-4 with a RBI double and a walk, while Guzman went 2-5 with a double and a run scored and Urbanus finished 1-5 with a double and a run scored.
The Crawdads (37-30) will take on the Shorebirds (27-40) again on Saturday in game two of their four-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
