Freedom Rally In Ninth For Comeback Win
August 27, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
YPSILANTI, MI - With their backs against the wall the Florence Freedom came through Thursday, overtaking the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti with a four run ninth to win 8-6.
The Freedom entered the ninth inning trailing 5-4 and were just 1-33 on the season when trailing into the ninth, but Florence refused to lay down, even in the pouring rain.
Jay Johnson got the ninth going with a one out single off closer Arshwin Asjes. Matt Stiffler and Tim Grogan followed with walks to load the bases. Ryan Basham followed by tying the game up at five with a RBI single to the opposite field, moving the go-a-head runner to third. Asjes then uncorked a wild pitch in the dirt to Billy Mottram which allowed Stiffer to score Freedom's sixth run. Mottram would later come through with his first hit of the night to drive in two and make it 8-5.
Jonathan Miller allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth, but with two outs, got Jonnie Knoble to fly out to left field to seal the win, picking up his thirteenth save.
Demetrius Banks (7-4) came in from the pen for the Freedom in the sixth inning and went 2 2/3 for the win. Banks allowed the Sliders fifth run in a 4-4 tie in the eighth before getting some help from his offense in the ninth.
Johnny Welch gave the Freedom their first lead in the fourth when he doubled in two to make it 3-1. Welch later scored on Brad Hough's RBI single.
The Freedom did all their damage early against Slider's starter Scott Van Es, as the bats went silent from the fifth inning on until the ninth as the Sliders made their comeback.
But with the win, the Freedom (45-42) ran their streak to eight games and finished 6-0 against the Sliders at Oestrike Stadium and 8-4 on the season.
Next up for the Freedom is a three game trip to the division leading Kalamazoo Kings beginning Friday at 7:05 p.m. Follow the team while they are on the road at Classic Country 106.7 FM WNKR or www.1067WNKR.com.
