Florence Y'alls
For the first time in the history of the Florence Freedom, the club has won more games than it has lost. With their 6-4 win Friday evening over the Richmond Roosters at McBride Stadium in Richmond, the Freedom won the series and improved to two wins and one loss on the young season.
Left fielder Brandon Cornell had two hits and two RBI's and Freedom starter Joel Posey scattered seven hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. Posey's win was his seventh as a member of the Freedom, which tied him with Bobby Graves for the franchise record. The Roosters were led by reigning Rookie of the Year, Kevin White who collected three hits and three RBI, including a ninth-inning two-run home run. The Roosters were done in by three errors, two of which came in the second inning when the Freedom scored three runs. Justin Fuller and Bellevue, Kentucky's own Lenny Bays finished the game, pitching 3 2/3 innings and giving up two runs, both by Bays. Four other Freedom hitters collected two hits apiece.
The Friday win for the Freedom followed an opening day, four-hit shutout loss to Matt Schweitzer and the Roosters, 5-0. That loss negated a fantastic start by Freedom righty Mike Dennison, who allowed only one run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven Roosters. The Freedom rebounded Thursday night with a thrilling 15-8 win behind a strong starting performance by left-hander Jason Sena, who pitched six innings and only gave up two runs. Sena allowed six hits and walked five while striking out four, but the Freedom pitchers were bailed out by three double plays.
The Freedom open their home schedule this evening against the Chillicothe Paints, the team formerly managed by new Freedom skipper Jamie Keefe. The Paints are 2-1 this season as well having won their opening series against the Evansville Otters. The game at Champion Windows Field in Florence begins at 7:05 this evening. This game is the beginning of a nine evening game homestand for the Freedom, tonight, Sunday and Monday against Chillicothe, Wednesday through Friday against Evansville and Saturday through Monday against Ohio Valley.
