(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (35-41), presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, used a five-run fourth inning to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies (28-47) by a final score of 9-2 Friday night at UC Health Stadium.
The game was tied at one heading into the bottom half of the fourth. Austin Newell singled and moved to second on a Sam Eberle single. After Collins Cuthrell reached on a fielder's choice to keep runners on first and second, Frazier Hall reached on an infield single to load the bases. Eberle came into score on an Ozzy Gonzalez ground ball that Grant Buckner booted for an error. With the bags still full, Travis Weaver and Steve Carrillo each walked to drive in runs. Daniel Fraga capped the rally with a two-RBI single. Florence led 6-1 after four frames.
Florence starter Zach Wendorf (1-1) tossed six innings allowing two runs on two hits. The rookie out of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point fanned seven to earn his first professional win.
Florence got on the board in the bottom half of the second. Eberle singled and stole second. Frazier Hall ripped a double into the left center gap to drive in Eberle. Florence held a 1-0 lead after two innings.
Florence crossed another run in the seventh thanks to a two out rally. Austin Newell singled and came all the way around to score on a Sam Eberle double. Eberle went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Florence led 7-2 after seven.
The Freedom got two more in the eighth. Andrew Godbold singled and moved to second an Ozzy Gonzalez walk. Both runners advanced 90 feet closer on a wild pitch. Godbold came into score when Weaver delivered a sacrifice fly to right field. Steve Carrillo closed out the scoring for Florence, lining a single that plated Gonzalez. Florence led 9-2 after eight.
Austin Delmotte earned his first professional save, tossing the final three innings out of the 'pen. The rookie did not allow a hit and fanned three. Gateway's only two hits in the entire game came in the third inning.
