Freedom Capture Series Opener, Defeat CornBelters 9-5

Stephen Shults went three for four, driving in four runs, and Julian Arballo tossed 6 2 /3 innings of strong starting pitching to lead the Florence Freedom to a 9-5 win over the Normal Cornbelters on Wednesday evening at Champion Window Field in game one of a three game series.
The Freedom jumped on top 1-0 in the first frame. Three consecutive singles in the first, the final one by Stephen Shults, gave Florence a 1-0 lead after three.
Normal tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, as two errors with a steal of home by Daniel Cox knotted the contest.
In the bottom of the fourth, Shults put the Freedom up 2-1 with an RBI double, and a Jimmy Baker sacrifice fly upped the lead to 3-1.
The Cornbelters would equalize the contest with two markers in the fifth, on a two run single by Daniel Cox.
The Freedom would then take control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-3 lead. With two outs, the Freedom loaded the bases on a single, a walk, and a hit batsman. Shults plated two runs with an RBI single to make it 5-3, and Tim Grogan would follow with a two run double to extend the lead to 7-3. Jimmy Baker's RBI triple closed the scoring in the frame.
Patrick Rose, playing in his first game with the Freedom after a trade from Evansville, singled home a run in the sixth to make it 9-3 for the Freedom.
Normal closed the scoring in the seventh on a two run single by Asif Shah off of Brian Banes.
Arballo (3-3) earned the win, going 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and five runs, while walking a season high eight and fanning one. Banes and Liam Ohlmann finished up for the Freedom.
Ryan Sheldon (3-4) took the defeat for Normal, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing ten hits on eight runs. Jason Furrow went 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Cornbelters, walking none and striking out six.
The series continues with game two on Thursday night, as Andy Clark opposes Normal's Andrew Guarrasi. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
