Fourth Walk Off In Seven Games Dooms Diablos

August 28, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

WICHITA, KS- Jake Kahaulelio's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Jared McDonald to give the Central Division champion Wichita Wingnuts a 5-4 win over the Diablos, handing El Paso its 50th loss of the 2012 season.

The walk off loss was the fourth of that type in the last seven games for the Diablos who have lost a season-high seven straight games, all on the current road trip.

El Paso jumped out to an early lead on Mitch Einertson's run-scoring sacrifice fly, but the Wingnuts struck a big blow in the bottom of the first on C.J. Ziegler's three-run home run. Trailing 3-1, the Diablos got closer on J.J. Muse's RBI single to make the score 3-2.

Then, neither team scored for the next five innings. Diablos starter Kevin Cooper retired 13 straight hitters at one point, shaking off the early home run to keep the Diablos in the game. He was matched by Wichita hurler Anthony Capra, who threw six solid innings for the Wingnuts. Wichita was the first to break the scoreless freeze, plating an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI groundout by David Peralta.

The Diablos, down to their last three outs, fought to tie the score against Josh Dew (3-0). Jermy Acey's RBI triple made the score 4-3, and Zane Chavez's sacrifice fly knotted the score at four.

Again, however, El Paso fell in the game's final at-bat. The Wingnuts loaded the bases on a hit and a pair of walks before Kahaulelio's deep fly off Justin Harper (4-2) plated the winning run.

The Diablos are 44-50 with six games left to play. Game four of the series with the Wingnuts is Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (6:05 p.m. MST).
