Saints Rout 'Cats 13-6

GARY, Ind. - St. Paul scored four runs in the first inning on Wednesday night and never looked back, beating the RailCats 13-6. The loss drops the 'Cats to 46-48 on the season.

The Saints piled up 10 runs on 14 hits against RailCats starter Morgan Coombs, who had the roughest start of his rookie season. Ole Sheldon hit an RBI double in the first and Ronnie Bourquin followed with a three-run shot to right to give St. Paul a 4-0 lead. Coombs (6-8) took the loss

St. Paul added on in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Miles Durham. In the fourth, Willie Cabrera hit a sac fly and Jose Hernandez a two-run single to make it 8-0. Jim Rapoport hit a two-run homer in the fifth to put the RailCats in a 10-0 hole.

The 'Cats got on the board in the fourth inning against Saints starter Kyle Ruwe. Mike Massaro hit an RBI single, Craig Maddox an RBI groundout, Mike Rohde hit a run-scoring single and Zac Mitchell a sac fly to cut the deficit to 10-4. Massaro added a sacrifice fly in the sixth the bring the 'Cats to within 10-5.

St. Paul answered in the top of the eighth, adding two runs on an RBI singles from Bourquin and Miles Durham to give the Saints a 12-5 advantage. Bourquin finished 4-for-4 on the night with four RBI and a a pair of runs scored.

With the bases loaded and no out in the bottom half of the eighth, Adam Klein grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to score Trevor Willis, cutting the lead to 12-6.

The Saints got the run right back in the ninth on Ole Sheldon's RBI single to make the score 13-6. St. Paul finished with 22 hits on the night, tying the most allowed by RailCats pitching this season.

Game two of the four-game series is at 7:10 PM on Wednesday. Will Krout (3-5, 3.76) takes the ball for the RailCats.
