American Association Game Recaps

August 28, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release

Wichita 5, El Paso 4

With the bases loaded and just one man out in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 4-4 tie, Wichita 2B Jake Kahaulelio stepped to the plate with a chance to win the game. He didn't disappoint, knocking the ball into left field deep enough to bring in Jared McDonald from third base and give his club a 5-4, walkoff win. Kahaulelio went 2-for-3 and scored twice in addition to his game-winning RBI. The Diablos used three hits, including a Jermy Acey triple, to score two runs and tie the score in the top of the ninth. But a comeback victory wasn't in the cards for the visitors from El Paso. Acey went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Quebec 5, Lincoln 4

Trailing, 4-3, entering the ninth inning, Quebec was faced with a put up or shut up moment. The Capitales chose the former, and after a walk and a Jonathan Malo double tied the score, CF Sebastien Boucher singled in Malo to give Quebec a 5-4, walkoff victory. The Capitales trailed from the outset against Lincoln on Tuesday, with the Saltdogs pushing across four runs over the first two innings. But there was no quit in Quebec, as three seventh-inning runs pulled the home team within striking distance and set up the dramatic final frame. Malo, whose ninth-inning double was his 23rd of the year, scored twice while tying Saltdogs 1B Jimmy Rohan for the game high in hits with three.

Grand Prairie 9, Sioux Falls 2

The AirHogs scored five runs in the first inning to take a four-run lead over Sioux Falls. And Grand Prairie never looked back, defeating the Pheasants, 9-2. Three AirHogs went yard in the win, with LF Jonny Kaplan picking up his first home run of the year. Kaplan went 2-for-4 on the night, bringing his average to .272. The Pheasants took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when SS Cory Morales stole home, his eighth steal of the year. But the five-run AirHogs first put the visitors on top for good. Starting Grand Prairie pitcher Alain Quijano earned his third win of the year, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Winnipeg 5, Sioux City 3

Goldeyes RF Josh Mazzola went 3-for-5, hitting his 18 homer of the season to lead Winnipeg past Sioux City, 5-3. Mazzola also doubled Tuesday, falling a triple shy of the cycle. The Explorers led, 2-1, before a three-run Winnipeg third inning that put the Goldeyes on top for good. Sioux City 1B Jorge Delgado hit his fourth double of the season to drive in the first run of the game, putting the Explorers up, 1-0, in the top of the first inning. Delgado went 2-for-4 on the night with two RBI.

Laredo 6, Fargo-Moorhead 4

Laredo scored four of its six runs in the fourth inning and took down Fargo-Moorhead, 6-4, Tuesday. Lemurs 3B Uriak Marquez went 2-for-4 and hit his ninth double in a Laredo uniform, scoring once and driving in a run for the Lemurs. Marquez was one of three Lemurs with multiple hits while the RedHawks had just one; 1B Marcos Rodriguez went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Fargo-Moorhead. Holding onto its two-run lead in the ninth, Laredo put reliever Mike Benacka on the mound. Benacka struck out two RedHawks while giving two free passes to earn his 11th save of the season.

St. Paul 13, Gary SouthShore 6

St. Paul scored two or more runs in four separate innings Tuesday against Gary SouthShroe, including a four-run first frame, defeating the RailCats, 13-6. Saints 3B Ronnie Bourquin dominated RailCats pitching, going 4-for-5 and belting out his 11th home run of the season. In total, Bourquin scored twice and drove in four runs, including three on his three-run blast in the first. Gary SouthShore had five players with multiple hits, led by LF Adam Klein's 3-for-5 night. Klein scored his 69th run of the season as part of a four-run Gary SouthShore fifth. Even after that inning, however, St. Paul held a six-run advantage, cruising to victory over the RailCats.

Amarillo 8, Kansas City 7

The Sox trailed by as many as four runs against Kansas City, but six runs in their final four innings at the plate helped Amarillo earn an 8-7 victory. Sox 2B Adam Buschini went 3-for-5 with two doubles while driving in a game-best three RBI. Buschini also scored two runs. The T-Bones shared the wealth Tuesday, as each of their seven runs were scored by different players. Perhaps with the most impressive night in the Kansas City dugout, LF Brandon Jones went 3-for-5 and drove in a run while scoring once. Jones' RBI put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth inning. But the T-Bones lineup couldn't push anymore across against Sox reliever Wes Littleton, who earned his fourth save of the season.
