Lake County Captains News Release
(FORT WAYNE, IN) - The Lake County Captains (30-26) scored four of their five runs and gained five of their seven hits in the top of the ninth inning, to complete a 5-3 comeback victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (22-35) on a sunny Sunday at Parkview Field.
After the first out was recorded in the ninth, Joe Naranjo singled and then the TinCaps brought in right-hander Luke Boyd to face Jhonkensy Noel up 3-1. Noel powered a mammoth home run to deep left field, his 15th of the season, and his second of the series to tie up the score.
With two outs, Petey Halpin lined a triple down the right field. Johnathan Rodriguez would smack a double to right-center field to score Halpin and take the lead. Gabriel Rodriguez followed up with a double of his own, making it a 5-3 advantage. This all happened as a drizzle began to fall.
The offense for both sides got off to a slow start. Tommy Mace tossed two scoreless innings, escaping bases loaded in the second. Randy Labaut would keep the TinCaps bats quiet from the third through the fifth inning permitting just one hit.
Fort Wayne took their lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After back-to-back singles to begin the inning, a sacrifice fly brought home the game's first run. Robert Hassell III in his first game back coming off the Covid list hammered a two-run homer into the bleachers behind the right-field wall.
Lake County was held hitless, up until the eighth, by three Fort Wayne pitchers. Petey Halpin would reach on a bunt single to begin the eighth. He would score on an opposite filed single off the bat of Gabriel Rodriguez to make it a 3-1 deficit for the Captains in the ninth.
Cade Smith retired the TinCaps 1-2-3 in the ninth, to finish off two innings of work and a series win for Lake County.
Following an off day, the Lake County Captains return to Classic Park and begin a six-game series against the Beloit Sky Carp. The first matchup between the two this season is on Tuesday, June 14 with first pitch at 12:05 p.m.
