Caissie Homer Propels Cubs to 4-3 Victory

South Bend Cubs News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - It didn't look great for the Cubs offense early, but Owen Caissie's three-run homer late in the game flipped the script and served as a shot in the arm to the Cubs on Saturday night.
Aaron Rozek got the start on the hill for the kernels and tossed four scoreless frames while not allowing a hit until the fourth inning.
Meanwhile it was Jordan Wicks starting for the Cubs and cruising for the second time in a row with a six-up, six-down start to the game. The lefty issued a leadoff walk to Will Holland in the third and Wander Javier drilled a double out to left-center field to plate the first run. The next inning, for the second night in a row, former first rounder Aaron Sabato launched an opposite field home run. The solo shot made it 2-0 in favor of the first place team in the West.
Wicks finished tossing five innings for the third time in his last five outings and tying a career best with eight strikeouts. Zac Leigh came in out of the bullpen firing on all cylinders, striking out the first four he faced in his second appearance at Four Winds Field, and logging two scoreless frames to keep the Cubs alive. He ultimately received the win.
Yeison Santana kickstarted the rally for South Bend in the seventh. The 21-year-old extended his hitting streak to seven games and when Jake Washer singled through the right side of the infield it brought the go-ahead run to the plate. After taking the first pitch, Caissie unloaded on one, scorching it at 111 mph off the bat and well over the wall in right field. That gave the Cubs the lead and they wouldn't surrender it.
Fabian Pertuz tripled off the wall in center in the eighth inning and scored on an error with two outs by Wander Javier at shortstop. The unearned run was critical because the Kernels got a run back in the ninth before Hunter Bigge came on and stranded a pair to end the game and cap off a 4-3 victory.
Cubs pitchers combine to tie their season high as Wicks, Leigh, Eduarniel Nunez, and Bigge combined to strikeout 16 batters.
South Bend can get a series split with a win tomorrow in the series finale, which is set to start at 2:05 p.m.
