Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (34-38) used a four-run first inning to beat the Columbus Clippers (41-32) in game one, Tuesday at Principal Park.
Nolan Jones opened the scoring for Columbus with an RBI triple in the first inning, but their lead wouldn't last for long, as Iowa answered with four runs of their own in their half of the first.
A triple from Darius Hill tied the game at one and Narciso Crook singled him home to take the lead. They grew the lead to 4-1 with a two-run blast by Jared Young. Jones drove in his second run of the game in the third with an RBI double.
Up 4-2, Iowa scored two in the fourth on a double from Levi Jordan and one in the fifth on a throwing error, bringing their lead to 7-2. Each team's bullpen took over from there, throwing scoreless frames for the remainder of the game.
For Iowa, Brandon Leibrandt followed starter Matt Dermody who allowed just two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over his five innings pitched. Leibrandt spun four perfect frames, striking out one along the way to seal the win for the I-Cubs.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Jared Young's home run in the first inning broke a streak of seven games without a home run for the I-Cubs. Young hit their last home run last Saturday against Omaha and broke the streak with his two-run blast tonight.
- Columbus got a leadoff single in the fifth taken out by a double play, starting a streak of 13 straight batters retired by Iowa to end the game.
Iowa and Columbus are scheduled to meet for game two of their six-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12:08 pm at Principal Park. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
