June 28, 2022 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
IOWA CUBS (33-38) vs. COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (41-31)
Tuesday - 6:38 PM - Principal Park - Des Moines, IA
LHP Matt Dermody (2-3, 5.12) vs. RHP Tobias Myers (1-8, 5.53)
TONIGHT'S GAME: After splitting the series in Louisville, Iowa is back home to start a six-game set against Columbus tonight. Taking the ball for the home squad in the opener will be Matt Dermody. The lefty is 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA (29ER/51.0IP) so far this year, including a 1-3 record and a 5.26 ERA (22ER/37.2IP) as a starter. While he is coming off two no-decisions, Dermody put together two of his strongest starts of the season in his last two outings. He has allowed just one earned run over his last nine innings of work. Opposite of him will be righty Tobias Myers for Columbus. Myers has pitched to a 1-8 record for the Clippers and has taken the loss in three straight outings coming into tonight's game. He'll face off with the I-Cubs for the second time this year after losing his start against them on May 18. In that game, he surrendered six runs on six hits and four walks in 4.2 innings of work.
GET ONE OUT: In Sunday's 10-5 loss to Louisville, Iowa scored five runs on three singles, a sacrifice fly and a throwing error. It extended their streak of games without hitting a home run to a season-long seven, dating back to June 19 against Omaha and spanning over the entire six-game series against the Bats. In those seven games, they have combined to hit 16 doubles and one triple, including two games with four doubles and a three double game. Their last home run came off the bat of their home run leader Jared Young, back on June 18th in the sixth inning. That home run put them at 67 on the year, good for 12th in the International League. They are still stuck on 67 long balls for the year and now rank 16th in the IL. Zero home runs over the course of the entire six-game series against Louisville sets a series low for the season, previously at just two home runs in Iowa's series against Indianapolis from April 26-May 1.
HE'S BACK: While the I-Cubs faced off with the Clippers once already this season, Columbus was missing a big piece of their lineup last time in Nolan Jones. The outfielder, who is listed as Cleveland's No. 7 prospect by MLB.com, missed the first two months of the season after ankle and back injuries. Since returning, he has hit .279 (17-for-61) with five doubles, a home run and 12 RBI in 16 games. The I-Cubs will look to keep him quiet this week after largely failing to do so last season. In 12 games against Iowa in 2021, Jones hit .325 (13-for-40) with six doubles and five home runs. He took ten walks, drove in ten runs, scored 11 runs and stole two bases. The extra-base power gave him a team-high .850 slugging percentage against the I-Cubs, which contributed to a 1.321 OPS. That was good for the fourth-highest OPS of any opposing player against Iowa last season (min. 15 AB's).
OUT OF ROTATION: After Caleb Kilian left the game on Sunday, Cam Sanders came in out of the bullpen, marking his first relief outing of the year. Sanders had made 13 combined starts between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa to start 2022 after starting all 18 games he appeared in in 2021. In fact, Sunday's relief appearances broke a streak of 49 consecutive starts for Sanders that began on April 24, 2019. In 69 total Minor League appearances, the righty has made 18 relief appearances, but 16 of them came in Rookie League and Short-Season A in 2018. Since then, Sanders has gone 1-1 as a reliever with a 3.52 ERA (3ER/7.2IP), compared to a 4.05 mark (108ER/240.0IP) as a starter.
ONE AT A TIME: Outfielder Greg Deichmann went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk in Sunday's game against Louisville, extending his hitting streak to a season-long seven games. Over his seven-game streak, he has recorded exactly one hit in each game, dating back to June 18 against Omaha. With a hit on Sunday, he surpassed his previous season long stretch of six games, set back from May 29 to June 4. Entering tonight, his current streak is two games shy of tying the longest of his career. That was nine games set last year with Triple-A Las Vegas from July 13-23; he has had streaks of eight four times in his career including the nine-game streak last July. Deichmann is hitting .304 (7-for-23) with one double, three runs batted in and three walks over his seven-game hitting streak, bringing his average with Iowa on the year to .237 (36-for-152) through 47 games.
LITTLE BY LITTLE: Brendon Little threw 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball on Sunday, allowing just one baserunner. The outing was Little's first scoreless appearance in the month of June, ending a seven-game streak of outings where he'd allowed at least one run. The rocky stretch came after Little had opened his season with seven straight scoreless appearances. After starting his year late from the injured list, the lefty joined the I-Cubs on May 8 and pitched 9.2 innings in the month of May without allowing a single run. He gave up just three hits, and while he did walk eight, he also struck out nine over those seven appearances. Once the calendar turned, however, it was a different story. From June 1 to June 23, Little allowed 13 earned runs in ten innings, earning him an 11.70 ERA over that stretch. Opponents hit .318 against Little in the first part of June after he'd limited them to a .100 average in May. With Sunday's scoreless outing in the books, he now owns an overall season ERA of 5.57 (13ER/21.0IP) in 15 games for the I-Cubs.
AGAINST COLUMBUS: Iowa and Columbus are set to meet for their second and last six-game series of the year at Principal Park, with the season series currently tied at three games apiece. The Clippers bring a two-game winning streak against Iowa into tonight's game, winning each of the last two games on May 21 and 22. Despite splitting that series evenly, the I-Cubs outscored Columbus 30-27, scoring seven or more in each of their three wins and three or less in each of their three losses. Iowa enters the series 7-11 all-time against Columbus including going 4-8 here at Principal Park.
SHORT HOPS: Iowa is .500 (6-6) in series openers this season, including a 3-3 record at home...Columbus infielder David Fry enters tonight's game on a five-game hitting streak against the I-Cubs...Columbus currently has three players (min. 10 AB's) hitting over .290 against Iowa, while Iowa has nobody (min. 10 AB's) hitting over .240 against Columbus.
