Four-Run Eighth Sends WV to Division-Clinching Win over Legends

Kevin Kramer's run-scoring single broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the West Virginia Power went on to a 5-1 win over the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon in Charleston. The win clinched the South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half title for the Power.

West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Francisco Diaz doubled home Chase Simpson, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Legends tied the game in the sixth on a triple by Michael Hill and a double by Austin Bailey.

In the bottom of the eighth, a walk to Tyler Filliben and bunt singles by Tito Polo and Kevin Newman loaded the bases with no outs. Kramer's single to right field brought Filliben home with the tie-breaking run. After Michael Suchy grounded into a force play at home plate, Jerrick Suiter walked to force home a run, and Elvis Escobar's sacrifice fly scored Kramer, giving West Virginia a 4-1 lead. A single by Simpson scored Suchy with the game's final run.

Jared Lakin (2-0) pitched the last two innings of the game and picked up the win. He allowed two hits, struck out three batters and walked none. Starter Austin Coley worked the first seven innings and limited the Legends to three hits. He struck out five, and also did not walk a batter.

Nick Green (0-2), who also entered the game in the eighth, took the loss. Legends starter Matt Tenuta pitched seven innings. He gave up four hits and one unearned run. In his last four starts, Tenuta has allowed two earned runs in 24 and two-thirds innings.

West Virginia has won the first two games in the five-game series, which continues Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
