Offense Sputters as 'Dads Fall 2-1

Salisbury, MD - The Hickory Crawdads offense was stymied for the second straight game against the Delmarva Shorebirds Sunday night, as the 'Dads followed up their shutout defeat in game one with a 2-1 loss to the 'Birds from Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The small offensive output was nearly enough to win the game, as the Crawdads held a 1-0 lead after 5 innings thanks to a shutout performance by spot starter John Werner. The Shorebirds were able to jump on 'Dads reliever Adam Quintana in the 6th however, as the right-handed hurler allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in his South Atlantic League debut to put Hickory behind by the 2-1 score they would lose by.
The Crawdads have now been held to one run on 10 combined hits over the first two games and 18 innings in Delmarva, after the club averaged 5.5 runs per game while winning three of four games the prior series over Charleston.
Neither team was able to put up a run over the first four frames, with the 'Dads finally breaking the tie with a tally in the 5th to take a 1-0 advantage. Eduard Pinto started the inning with a leadoff single against Delmarva starter Dariel Delgado, and was followed one out later by a base knock to center by Jonathan Meyer. After a strikeout by Michael De Leon, leadoff batter Carlos Arroyo came through with a two-out, RBI single to right to score Pinto and give Hickory the lead.
The 'Birds countered with their only offensive frame in the bottom of the 6th, when the first four batters reached on consecutive walks to Logan Uxa and Cam Kneeland followed by a single from Yermin Mercedes and an RBI base knock by Elier Leyva to drive in the first run. One out later, Steel Russell put Delmarva ahead with an RBI sacrifice fly to center to make the score 2-1.
Quintana would settle in for the Crawdads after his shaky beginning by tossing perfect innings in the 7th and 8th and retiring the final 9 batters he faced, but the 'Dads bats weren't able to muster a late rally resulting in the 2-1 defeat.
Delgado (7-3) earned the win for the 'Birds with one run allowed on four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts over a career-high 7 innings pitched. Quintana (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits, 2 walks, and four strikeouts over three innings, while Delmarva reliever Max Schuh (2) earned the save after throwing two scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Pinto led the Hickory offense with a 1-3 game including a walk and a run scored, while Arroyo finished 1-4 with an RBI and Juremi Profar went 1-4 with a double.
The Crawdads (77-53/33-29) and Shorebirds (66-64/33-29) will play again Monday night in game three of the 5-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
