Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds edged out the Hickory Crawdads in another low-scoring affair with a 2-1 victory on Sunday evening. Dariel Delgado starred with a career night on the mound, leading Delmarva to their second straight win over Hickory.
Delgado took the bump looking to build on two wins in his previous two starts, at Lakewood and at Kannapolis. On Sunday, Delgado did not allow a hit in his first four innings. Hickory finally broke through with three singles in the fifth inning, plating their only run of the night. Delgado finished a career-high seven innings, limiting the Crawdads to one run on four hits.
Crawdads' starter John Werner matched Delgado pitch for pitch in the scoreless duel. In his first start with Hickory, Werner completed five scoreless innings, his longest outing of his brief professional career. The tide turned when Hickory went to the bullpen in the sixth inning.
Reliever Adam Quintana made his Crawdads' debut on Sunday, entering with a 1-0 lead in the sixth. Quintana walked Cam Kneeland and Logan Uxa to spark a Shorebirds rally. Yermin Mercedes singled to load the bases with no outs. Elier Leyva shot an RBI single through the right side to tie the game, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Steel Russell lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Uxa for the go-ahead run and a 2-1 lead.
After Delgado, Max Schuh finished off the victory from the bullpen. Schuh tossed a perfect eighth inning, and then walked a batter in the ninth. With the tying run aboard, Schuh retired two more batters to close out the 2-1 win. Delgado recorded his third straight win to improve to 7-3, and Schuh wrapped up his second save.
The Shorebirds will go for an early series win over Hickory on Monday evening. Right-hander Francisco Jimenez (0-0, 3.86) will start game three for Delmarva opposite Hickory right-hander Pedro Payano (3-0, 0.89). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
