Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
The Binghamton Mets batted around and took the lead for good in the eighth inning, beating the Reading Phillies 8-6 at FirstEnergy Stadium Saturday. The win is Binghamton's third in four games.
After Reading got a run off Kevin Mulvey in the first on Jason Hill's RBI groundout, Binghamton (48-63) countered with a pair in the second. Vince Harrison and Brett Harper began the frame with singles before Carlos Carrasco walked Mike Nickeas to load the bases. Two batters later, Ryan Coultas hit a sacrifice fly that scored Harper before Mulvey singled in Nickeas for a 2-1 B-Mets lead.
Michael Garciaparra's RBI groundout in the second tied the game 2-2, but Jamar Hill homered in the fourth to put the B-Mets back on top. However, Reading (58-56) got a game-tying RBI groundout from pinch-hitter Shaun Boyd in the sixth before Mike Costanzo homered off Mulvey (9-9) in the seventh for a 4-3 Phillies lead.
Mike Carp began the eighth with a single off reliever Julio De La Cruz before moving to second on a groundout. Harper drew a walk before Nickeas doubled in Carp with the tying run. After De La Cruz (1-4) intentionally walked Hill to load the bases, pinch-hitter Wilson Batista hit a groundball that was thrown away by the second baseman Garciaparra as Harper and Nickeas scored for a 6-4 B-Mets lead. J.E. Cruz followed with a pinch-hit double that brought in Hill to make it 7-4.
The B-Mets tacked on another run in the ninth when Carp singled and scored on an error. Reading's Jason Hill hit a two-out, two-run homer off Raul Valdes in the bottom of the ninth, but the lefthander held on for his first save in as many chances.
Sunday, the B-Mets play the rubber game of their three-game series the Reading Phillies. Marcos Carvajal (5-8, 4.35) will start for the B-Mets against Zack Segovia (3-2, 3.77) of Reading. Game time is 6:05 from FirstEnergy Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 5:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
Notes: there were five errors committed in Saturday's game, leading to four unearned runs...Costanzo's homer was his 20th tying him with Erie's Jeff Larish for the league lead. Larish and Costanzo have combined to hit two of the three homers Mulvey's allowed this season.
