Connecticut Defenders News Release
The Connecticut Defenders made it two straight wins against the Erie Sea Wolves on Saturday August 4. With fans delighting in the Citizens National Bank Cash Giveaway, fans received money and were treated to several home runs in the Defenders defeat of the Sea Wolves 8-3.
The Defenders put together the big inning for the second consecutive night. In the bottom of the third inning Connecticut put up 5 runs to propel them to a comfortable lead. C Dayton Buller singles and SS Trey Webb followed with a double, before OF Carlos Sosa hit an RBI groundout to push across the first run. OF Eugenio Velez followed with an RBI single to score Webb and after a single by OF John Bowker, DH Randy Ruiz belted a 2-run home run (3) an out later. The Defenders added another run on a sacrifice fly by Sosa in the bottom of the fourth and led 6-0 after four full innings.
Starter Dave McKae was absolutely dominant through the first five frames finally surrendered a run in the sixth inning. He surrendered a leadoff triple to 3B Nick McIntyre, misjudged by Velez in the outfield, and McIntyre can in to score on an RBI groundout by 2B Will Rhymes.
In the top of the seventh inning McKae ran into some real trouble and gave up two extra base hits and a single, while retiring two batters, before being pulled in favor or reliever Osiris Matos. With two runs already across on an RBI double by DH Wilkin Ramirez and an RBI single by McIntyre, Matos entered and surrendered a single and a walk to load the bases with the go ahead run at the plate. But he came on strong to strike out OF Matt Joyce to end the threat and end the inning with a 6-3 Defenders lead. Connecticut responded in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back solo home runs by Webb (3) and Sosa (6) to extend the Defenders lead to 8-3.
The team never looked back as Matos and Ryan Sadowski combined to shut down the Sea Wolves bats and put zeros on the board for both their eighth and ninth inning frames. Connecticut took the victory over Erie 8-3.
Andrew Kown (L, 4-7) absorbed his seventh loss of the season after pitching 4 innings, surrendering 7 hits, 6 runs, 1 walk and striking out 2 batters. Dave McKae (W, 5-2) picked up his fifth win after tossing 6.2 commanding innings, surrendering 3 runs, 7 hits, and tying a season high in strikeouts with 8, without walking a single batter. Trey Webb went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, a double and a home run, while Carlos Sosa went 1 for 3 with a home run and 3 RBI. As a result the Defenders won their second straight against the Sea Wolves and eighth straight at Dodd Stadium. Connecticut looks to go for the sweep in the series finale on Sunday August 5 at 2:05 p.m.
