
Four Homers Lead to Sweep

The Calgary Vipers smacked four home runs en route to a 14-2 victory over the Tijuana Big Horn Sheep at Cerro Colorado Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico. The offence was highlighted by Jonny Kaplan who hit a grand slam for four runs batted in while also scoring three times. With the victory the Vipers swept Tijuana and improve to 18-7 on the Golden Baseball League season and temporarily move to within a game and a half of the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division.
Making his first start in two weeks Joe Sergent (2-1) picked up the victory by throwing five innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out six.
Calgary quickly scored in the top of the first inning as Jorge Mejia hit his second home run of the season. Kaplan followed with a single, Kevin Price walked, after a wild pitch Brent Metheny drove in a run with a groundout, Caonabo Cosme singled home a tally, moved to second base on a wild pitch, and scored when Matt Edgecombe reached on an error for a 4-0 lead.
The Vipers broke the game wide open in the third frame when Price walked and Metheny hit his third home run in as many days. The inning continued with a Cosme single, Edgecombe walk, Dillon O'Krane single to load the bases, the pitcher Joe Sergent and Mejia drove in one each with base hits, and Kaplan made the most of his first long ball of the season for a grand slam and a 12-0 advantage.
Tijuana scored a run in the bottom of the inning as Jamci Mcglaw walked and Hebert Lara tripled him home for a 12-1 score.
In the top of the fifth Kaplan singled and Miller smacked his fifth big fly of the season for a 14-1 Snakes lead.
The Big Horn Sheep added a second run in the sixth frame as Eric Scriven and Henry Albornoz singled followed by a Marcos Chavez RBI base hit for a 14-2 game.
The Vipers continue their season long road trip which will see the team play ten games in the 11 days in Victoria against the Seals on Monday June 21st, Tuesday June 22nd, Wednesday June 23rd, and Thursday June 24th all at 8:00 PM MDT.
The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Friday June 25th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals. On Saturday June 26th the two teams will play a double-header starting at 1:35 PM MDT and it will be Kid's Day at the ballpark where the Inflatamaniacs will perform along with Clowns and Magicians.
On Tuesday June 29th and Wednesday June 30th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers will host the Edmonton Capitals for a two-game series. After the game on the 30th the Vipers will host a Canada Day Fireworks Spectacular.
