Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Looking for back-to-back wins for the first time in June, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park for game two of a three game set against the Edmonton Capitals. Giving rookie Jeff Duda (0-0) his second start of the season, the home side matched up against Edmonton ace Alexander Francisco (1-0) on Saturday night
The visitors jumped onto the board first in the top of the second inning when a solo home run off the bat of Matt Rogelstad gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead. The Capitals would stretch their lead to 3-0 in the third frame, with a double from Larry Bigbie setting up a two-run home run courtesy of Tom Collaro.
Finding more offense in the fourth inning, Edmonton used RBI base hits from both Steve Brown and Collaro to cash another pair of runners and take a commanding 5-0 lead early in the game. Padding their lead with another run in the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Bigbie lifted the Capitals to a six-run advantage.
Rounding out the scoring in the top of the eighth inning, Collaro's second home run of the game, a two-run shot, helped the Capitals take an 8-0 advantage into the bottom of that same inning.
After field manager Kip Gross was ejected following a hit by pitch to Dale Swinford in the bottom of the eighth, tempers really flared up in the top of the ninth inning. Taking a hard slide from runner Matt Rogelstad on a fielder's choice, Seals second basemen Wilver Perez came up throwing punches, clearing both benches for the first time in franchise history.
Once cooler heads prevailed, the Seals were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth inning and handed an 8-0 loss by the Capitals at Royal Athletic Park. A brilliant performance on the mound from Alexander Francisco was the difference for Edmonton, while Victoria's offense ran dry after 16 hits in the series opener.
Francisco picked up his second win of the season, while Victoria starter Jeff Duda falls to 0-1 with the loss. Tom Collaro led the offensive attack for Edmonton, posting a 4-for-5 outing with a total of five runs batted in.
