Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Wrapping up a three-game set against the Edmonton Capitals on Father's Day at Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals looked for their third series win on Sunday afternoon. Facing off against veteran Lou Pote (2-0) in the rubber match, the Seals countered with Jino Gonzalez (0-4) on the mound.
Getting the start they were looking for, Victoria jumped onto the board in the bottom of the first inning. After a lead-off single from Dale Swinford, a walk to Wilver Perez and another base hit from Colin Moro loaded the bases, a walk to Mike Mooney made it 1-0 Seals. The next batter, Josh Arhart, then drove a base hit into left field to score another pair, leaving Victoria on top 3-0 through one inning of work.
Answering right back on the first pitch of the second inning, Cliff Brumbaugh pulled the Capitals back within two on a solo shot to left field. Taking one step closer to a tie game, a near-home run from Larry Bigbie ended up as an RBI double, scoring Steve Brown to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
After Mooney picked up a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Arhart to restore Victoria's two-run lead, Edmonton came back within one in the top of the eighth inning on a solo home run courtesy of Alex Chavez.
Turning the tables with a home run of their own, the Seals stretched their advantage to 5-3 when Terrence McClain drove his team-leading fifth home run of the year over the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth frame.
Silencing the crowd by evening the game for the first time in the ninth, a full-count, two-out double off the bat of Cliff Brumbaugh scored Ryan Stevenson and Bigbie to knot the game at 5-5 and send the series finale to extra innings.
With closer Brandon Villafuerte retiring the Capitals in order to start the tenth, Mooney stepped back to the dish with one out in the bottom of the frame. Taking a curveball from Chad Blackwell off the scoreboard in left, the centrefielder's second home run of the series sent a capacity crowd home happy with a 6-5 walk-off win for the Seals.
Villafuerte claimed his second victory of the season for Victoria while Blackwell fell to 1-2 with the loss. Mike Mooney led the way offensively for the Seals, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's, while Cliff Brumbaugh finished with three hits and three batted in in a losing effort for Edmonton.
The Seals homestand resumes tomorrow night with the first of four games against the Calgary Vipers at Royal Athletic Park beginning at 7:05 p.m. (PT). The contest will be broadcast live at www.victoriaseals.ca and on 88.1 FM inside Royal Athletic Park.
