Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers left 11 men on base and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on Friday evening, in a 3-1 loss to the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (14-20) came a day after the Crushers executed their first sweep of the season, and ended their longest winning streak of the season, while the win for the Otters (23-14) was their third in four games against the Crushers this season.
On a night where the Crushers outhit the Otters, 11-6, Lake Erie wasted a number of opportunities, hitting into three double plays on the night, and left five runners stranded in scoring position.
Toddy Kibby (0-1) in his first start since coming off Tommy John surgery 10-months ago, lasted 2.2 innings, and allowed a pair of runs on three hits.
Evansville plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead. Jeremy Nowack started the mini-rally with a one out single to center. Kurt Wertz Jr. followed with a walk, and Cory Urquhart smashed a RBI double to left to score Nowack. Michael Jurgella drove in the next run on a sacrifice fly to score Wertz Jr.
After seeing a number of opportunities squandered over the first four innings, the Crushers plated their only run in the fifth inning. Emmanuel Quiles started the inning with a base hit to center, before advancing to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. A few batters later, Anderson Hidalgo stroked a two out single through the left side of the infield to score Quiles.
The Otters scored their final run on the game's only error in the top of the seventh. They had runners on first and second with two outs, when Dean Wilson dropped a bunt down the third base line. Brad Duffy fielded the bunt, but his throw to first ended up in the seats, and the errant throw allowed Wertz Jr. to score.
The Crushers put one last threat together in the bottom of the ninth. Quiles started the inning with a double to right, and Trevor Stevens was hit by a pitch to follow. However, Edgar Lopez (9) then induced a huge 5-3 double play, and then struck out Ty Nelson to end the game.
Will Oliver (4-2) scored the win for the Otters, allowing just an unearned run on 10 hits over seven innings of work and fanned five batters, while Lopez worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save. Kibby took the loss for the Crushers on a night where five Crusher pitchers saw action in relief.
Every Crusher reached safely at least once on the night, including Nelson who extended his on base streak to eight in the process. Austin Prott led the way for the Crushers, going 3-for-4 with three singles and a walk, and Quiles went 2-for-4, with Lake Erie's only extra base hit of the night.
The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night. Left-hander Brad Zambron (1-2, 4.78) will start for the Crushers, while the Otters will throw right-hander Tyler Vail (2-2, 4.86). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
