Fort Wayne shuts Loons out for second straight game

July 4, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - TinCaps' left-hander Mackenzie Gore twirled six shutout innings, and the Loons' offense went off like a dud on the Fourth of July in a 7-0 defeat at Parkview Field.

Fort Wayne has blanked the Loons for 18 straight innings, and the TinCaps' starters have kept the Loons' bats off-balance all series. Through three games, Fort Wayne frontmen have allowed one run to the Loons over 17 1/3 innings.

On Wednesday, Gore, the third overall pick in the 2017 June Draft, pitched a career-high six innings with a season-high six strikeouts. The 19-year-old earned the first win of his pro career in the process.

The TinCaps' hitters shot off some early fireworks in the second inning, singeing Loons' right-hander Andre Jackson for four runs on three hits. Jackson threw 28 pitches in the second inning alone and was removed from the game two outs into the second. Left-fielder Robbie Podorsky dealt the Loons a blow on a three-RBI triple in the second to make the score 4-0. Carlos Rincon took a poor route to the ball in right field, and the ball whizzed over his head on its way to the wall.

Rincon later committed an error in the seventh inning that allowed Fort Wayne's final run of the game to score. 18-year-old switch-hitter Justin Lopez homered for the TinCaps as well in the third inning off southpaw Devin Hemmerich; It was Lopez's first home run off a left-handed pitcher this season.

Almost all of the action for the Loons on the Fourth occurred before the game: upon arrival in Fort Wayne, the team learned right-handed reliever Aneurys Zabala had been traded by the Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds organization as part of a four-player deal. The Dodgers received Major League reliever Dylan Floro in the deal. It's the second year in a row a trade by the Loons' parent club has immediately affected the Loons' roster. Zabala allowed one run in his final nine innings in Loons' uniform.

Also during the day, the Dodgers' assigned their 10th-round pick in this year's draft, shortstop Deacon Liput, to the Loons' roster. The former Florida Gator did not play on Wednesday, but joins the roster following an injury to Opening Day shortstop Moises Perez.

The Loons play once more in Fort Wayne on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. EDT before returning to Dow Diamond for a four-game series against the Dayton Dragons.

The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
