CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels hosted its largest crowd of the year with 5,195 fans attending Wednesday's Fourth of July contest at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, but the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers came away with an 8-6 victory.
The Kernels (11-3, 43-40) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead Wednesday. Akil Baddoo tripled in the first inning and came home on Jacob Pearson's RBI groundout. Cedar Rapids added a run during the second inning with David Bañuelos' RBI double.
Wisconsin scored the next seven runs starting in the top of the fourth. Payton Henry drew a two-out walk before scoring during KJ Harrison's RBI double. The Timber Rattlers opened a fifth-inning, go-ahead rally with a bases-loaded walk for Tristen Lutz. Trever Morrison was hit by a pitch to force in another run, and Henry followed with an RBI single for a 4-2 Timber Rattlers lead.
Runs in the sixth and seventh innings secured the Timber Rattlers' 7-2 advantage. Darren Seferina produced an RBI groundout prior to an RBI double for Lutz within the sixth. Gabriel GarcÃa hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Cedar Rapids started its comeback attempt during its half of the seventh inning. Akil Baddoo collected a one-out single and stole second base before Jacob Pearson drove him in on an RBI triple. A dropped fly ball later in the frame allowed Baddoo to score and slice the gap to 7-4.
Harrison lifted Wisconsin to an 8-4 lead with an RBI single before the Kernels cut the difference in half to 8-6 in the eighth. Baddoo's triple brought Ben Rodriguez and Jared Akins home, but Cedar Rapids was unable to climb closer.
