
Former Phantoms Named to Preliminary Team USA World Junior Championship Roster

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - USA Hockey has unveiled the preliminary roster for the 2019 U.S. National Junior Team in preparation for the 2019 World Junior Championship. Two former Phantoms have earned a chance to audition for a spot on the final 23-man roster that will represent the United States in the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from December 25, 2018 - January 5, 2019, in Vancouver, BC.
Michael Callahan, a member of the 2018 Eastern Conference Champion team, and Jay O'Brien, were named to the preliminary roster.
Callahan a fifth round (142nd overall) selection of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 NHL Draft, skated in 22 games for the Phantoms after being acquired in a mid-season trade from Central Illinois. The Franklin, Mass. native totaled nine assists during his time with the Phantoms, and had three goals, six assists for 18 points on the season. The current Providence College defenseman has skated in all 15 games for the Friars tallying one goal, and 4 assists for 5 points and a +6 rating. Callahan notched his first collegiate goal on October 19 against UConn and tallied three assists in the month of November.
O'Brien, the 19th overall selection in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, skated in four games with the Phantoms in the 2016-17 season tallying one assists versus the Omaha Lancers. Also attending Providence College, the Hingham, Mass. native has skated in nine games for the Friars tallying one goal.
The former Phantoms will join the rest of their Team USA counterparts in Everett, WA, for training camp from Dec. 15-17 at Angel of the Winds Arena. The camp will serve as part of the selection process in determining the final roster for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. Following its camp in Everett, Team USA will travel to Kamloops where it will train at Sandman Centre from Dec. 18-20. During its time in Kamloops, Team USA will face off against Russia in a pre-tournament game at Sandman Centre on Dec. 20. The U.S. will then travel to Langley, BC to matchup with the Czech Republic in its final pre-tournament game at George Preston Recreation Centre on Dec. 22.
