El Paso Diablos News Release
EL PASO- Just two years ago during the 2009 season, Dane De La Rosa was pitching for the Diablos at Cohen Stadium. Tonight marks his major league debut with the Tampa Bay Rays. De La Rosa pitched 1 inning highlighted by striking out Yankee slugger Mark Teixeira, no hits, and 2 walks.
After his time with the Diablos, De La Rosa was signed by the Rays and spent 2010 divided between Charlotte (A+) and Montgomery (AA). This season, De La Rosa has been with Durham (AAA) with a 3.86 ERA, 50 strike outs in 46.2 innings. De La Rosa has a minor league total ERA of 2.71.
The right-handed pitcher started his pro career after being drafted by the New York Yankees in 2003. De La Rosa spent 2003 and part of 2004 with the Gulf Coast League (RK), and the other part of 2004 with the New York-Penn League (Staten Island, NY).
De La Rosa can look back on 4 seasons in Independent Baseball as being key in his development. De La Rosa was in the Golden League in three separate seasons (Yuma, AZ, 2005; Long Beach, CA, 2007; Orange County, Fullerton, CA, 2008) and divided 2009 between the American Association (El Paso, TX) and Atlantic League (Southern Maryland, Waldorf) before Tampa Bay garnered his rights. Then, after one season (9-3, four saves, 1.97 in 47 relief appearances at Class AA Montgomery, AL plus two earlier outings in the Florida State League) the Rays decided he deserved a 40-man slot.
Except for one season (2006) Californian De La Rosa has been pitching every year, and striking out more than one hitter per inning for his pro career.
